Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Physical Therapist:
Assessing Wounds:
Evaluate the type, size, depth, and severity of the wound.
Monitor wound healing progress and identify complications (such as infection, poor circulation, or non-healing).
Creating Treatment Plans:
Develop individualized care plans to promote wound healing, considering the patient's medical history and specific needs.
Use modalities like electrical stimulation, ultrasound, or heat/cold therapy to aid healing.
Pain Management:
Apply techniques like manual therapy, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), or soft tissue mobilization to reduce pain and discomfort associated with the wound.
Patient Education:
Teach patients proper wound care, hygiene practices, and how to manage their wounds at home.
Educate patients on strategies to prevent future injuries, such as pressure relief or proper posture.
Rehabilitation:
Help restore mobility, strength, and range of motion that may be impacted by wounds (e.g., after surgeries, burns, or pressure ulcers).
Promote functional independence and help patients return to daily activities.
Preventing Complications:
Prevent secondary complications like infections, pressure ulcers, or contractures by guiding patients on proper positioning, pressure relief, and exercises.
Assist patients with mobility aids or devices to avoid excessive pressure on the wound area.
Collaborating with Healthcare Teams:
Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure holistic care for patients.
Provide input on treatment plans, patient progress, and needed adjustments in care.
Documenting Progress:
Maintain detailed records of the wound's condition, patient progress, and any changes in treatment.
Track improvements or setbacks in the healing process and adjust treatment as needed.
Providing Specialized Therapies:
Utilize advanced wound care techniques such as debridement, compression therapy, or hydrotherapy to support healing.
Preventing Re-injury:
For patients at high risk (such as those with diabetes or limited mobility), work on strategies to prevent the recurrence of wounds (e.g., managing circulation, preventing falls).
Qualifications
Qualifications of the Physical Therapist:
- Graduate of a physical therapy curriculum accredited by either the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) or Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy (CAPT).
- Hold a valid State Physical Therapy License.
