Job Summary:
The Labor and Delivery Nurse is responsible for the planning and provision of nursing care to patients and their families during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods, including emergency situations and circulating for C-Sections. Supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel commensurate with their scope of practice.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Associate Degree(A.S.) or equivalent: Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing: Preferred
- Two years experience of Labor & Delivery: Required
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current RN license in state of practice: Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support): Required
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification: Required
- Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course: Required
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice: Required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Healthstream Advanced Cardiac Life Support (HS-ACLS) or RQIACLS: Required
Department Specific License/Certifications:
- Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM): Required
Essential Functions:
- Performs physical & psychosocial assessment of pt which demonstrates knowledge & consideration of age, cultural differences & support for fetal demise. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each pt in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
- Demonstrates appropriate clinical judgment in managing perinatal emergencies incl but not limited to: crash C-section, precipitous delivery, shoulder dystocia.
- During L&D is competent to assess fetal and maternal well being, assess amniotic fluid status, assess vaginal bleeding, and recognize and manage abnormalities. Effectively manages pain control in the laboring patient. Supports and implements alternative pain control when appropriate.
- Is competent to assist with epidural catheter placement and monitor fetal & maternal status during catheter placement and after medication administration. Educates pt/families in all stages of perinatal and post partum period and utilizes methods appropriate to age, condition, culture & learning readiness.
- Completes legible, accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluation of patient's response to medications, treatments & procedures. Consistently performs necessary unit specific safety and quality control checks (ie. Shift and 24hr MD order checks, TO/VO Read Back, crash cart checks, urine QC.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
