Job Summary:
Collects and distributes specimens in an inpatient setting. Supports laboratory including specimen ordering, processing and preparation for testing. Monitors specimens for send out to reference laboratory. Facilitates billing of lab charges, reports distribution and coordinates outside clinical training. Acts as resource for other staff members. Is responsible for a variety of technical tasks in the laboratory and performs other administrative tasks, as needed.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
- Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
- One year's Laboratory Assistant experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
Facility Specific License/Certifications:
- Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII): Required
Essential Functions:
- Interacts with Laboratory Information System for data entry, report recovery, and report distribution in inpatient setting. Enters the billing information into Hospital Information System. Processes laboratory orders for billing. Prepares laboratory reports and distribute to ordering individual.
- Collects, processes, and preserves specimens in inpatient settings. Performs clerical duties to process and report test results. Prioritize based on order status (STAT, ASAP, routine). Communicates effectively with other departments and staff, including physicians and their offices to facilitate the flow and quality.
- Processes and maintains records of specimens sent to reference labs. Assists in inventory management including ordering supplies and stocking supplies. Performs billing duties which may include running reports, and responding to biller requests.
- Completes microbiology pre-analytical procedures and documentation for laboratory testing according to laboratory policies including quality control standards, calibrations, and documentation. Documents quality control, calibration and test results.
- Assists Clinical Lab Scientist with operation of instrumentation. Consults with a clinical laboratory scientist or phlebotomy supervisor when difficulties are encountered in phlebotomy, test selection, or specimen processing.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
