Job Summary:
Assists overseeing and monitoring the day-to-day phlebotomy activities including performing, educating and overseeing all functions within the laboratory not limited to scheduling, specimen collection, labeling, receipt, processing, delivery and archiving for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease to conduct medical laboratory testing. Focuses on phlebotomy and specimen collection; may perform other, less complex technical and clerical tasks.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
- Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
- Two years' phlebotomy experience: Preferred
- Laboratory operations experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician CPT I or CPT II or National Healthcareer Association phlebotomy certification (CPT-NHA) or National Center for Competency phlebotomy certification (CPT-NCCT) or Medical Laboratory Technician license (MLT):: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
Department Specific License/Certifications:
- Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII) or NHA Certified Phlebotomy Tech (CPT-NHA) or Phlebotomy Tech-NCCT (NCCT-CPT): Required
Essential Functions:
- Assists oversight of daily operations and procedures necessary to obtain blood specimens, verifies specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type/volume for the indicated testing. Develops department procedures that are clearly written, cost effective and reviews them annually in accordance to center requirements. Checks order requisitions for order errors, making proper corrections and notifying the appropriate personnel.
- Prepares specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories. Ensures specimens are the proper specimen type for the test ordered, properly collected and stored, and labeled correctly for transport. Includes transfer packing list with each shipment of sent out specimens. Monitors pending phlebotomy draws, notifying and communicating with the phlebotomists and prioritizing draws according to type of draw (STAT, ASAP, timed study, and routine).
- Monitors equipment as needed per regulations, interfacing with clinical engineering and technical consultant when appropriate. Ensures staff follows established guidelines for missed collections, recollects, and difficult phlebotomies. Oversees ordering of supplies, ensuring procedures are followed. Assists in department staffing process, including hiring, termination transfers, in accordance with center's policies and procedures.
- Oversees the recording of all statistical information. Maintains updated files, documentation safety, preventive maintenance, etc. Provides orientation and training for staff to ensure comprehension of company policies and procedures.
- Oversees staff. Runs quality controls daily as needed as well as other required testing. Monitors staff and ensures proficiency testing per regulatory agency procedures and documented according to established guidelines. Maintains up to date department policies and procedures for testing and equipment.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
