Utility Systems Operator

Overview

The Utility Systems Operator is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, adjustment, and maintenance of various utility systems, including high-pressure steam boilers, ammonia refrigeration, well water, potable water, hot water, fire suppression, pneumatic, and HVAC equipment. This position requires hands-on expertise with diverse mechanical and electrical systems, alongside the ability to perform routine and emergency repairs, preventative maintenance, and system inspections. The role demands a proactive, self-directed individual capable of working effectively with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Operate steam boilers and associated equipment.
  • Operate ammonia refrigeration systems and associated equipment.
  • Operate hot water heating systems.
  • Manage plant and water filtration systems.
  • Operate air compressor systems.
  • Monitor HVAC, fire suppression, and air movers.
  • Perform daily equipment rounds, inspections, and water testing.
  • Conduct assigned preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment failures.
  • Perform general housekeeping and other assigned tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements :

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Six months of proven experience with ammonia refrigeration or high-pressure steam systems.
  • General mechanical or electrical maintenance experience.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communication in English.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Certifications or licenses in ammonia refrigeration or steam systems.
  • Familiarity with PSM / RMP standards.
  • One year of proven experience in industrial ammonia refrigeration or high-pressure steam systems.
  • One year of proven general or advanced maintenance experience.
  • Familiarity with water treatment systems, steam auxiliary equipment, air compressors, air conveyance equipment, pumps, fire suppression, and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Strong willingness to learn and advance in industrial ammonia refrigeration and high-pressure steam environments.
  • Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to perform preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance and repairs.
  • Proficiency in communicating and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Competence in taking and logging system readings to ensure proper functionality.
  • Self-directed and capable of working independently.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to safety and compliance standards.
  • Proactive in identifying and addressing potential issues.
  • Physical Demands :

    The role requires occasional standing, walking, or sitting; using hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; reaching with hands and arms; and talking or hearing. The employee may occasionally lift and / or move objects. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
