Major Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

• Explains warranty information of what is covered and what is not covered and how long their warranty is covered for.
• The optician will demonstrate any techniques to the customer or family members and offer tips to extend the life of the customer’s eyeglasses
• Finds out optical needs of customers coming to Dreyer’s Optical Department
• Fills prescriptions written by Dreyer’s optometrists and ophthalmologists and from optometrists and ophthalmologists from outside Clinic
• Assists customers in choosing the proper frames and lenses for their prescription and takes all measurements necessary to order eyeglasses for them
• Does adjustments and repairs of eyeglasses whenever necessary
• Answers billing, insurance, product warranty, and pricing information for the customer
• Consistently encourages questions from patients and family and offers supervised guidance that fosters compliance with physicians or optometrist’s plan for treatment
• The optician will instruct the customer about possible symptoms that may occur with changes in their prescription, lens material used, type of lens design chosen, or any changes in size and shape of the frame that had been chosen
• Informs the customer of the proper care, cleaning procedures, and handling of a new pair of eyeglasses
  
  

Documentation

• The optician will complete all necessary paperwork that pertains to each customer, including all measurements that were done, lens and frame information, any extra add-ons the customer had chosen for their order, and any notes or special instructions supplied by the customer or the optician for the optical laboratory to follow
• The optician will fully document all charges, insurance codes, and billing information on the optical voucher that will be sent the following day to the business office for processing
• Any discounts allowed will be noted on the optical voucher and will become part of the customer’s permanent record
• The optician will determine the deposit required to place the order and enters the amount of the deposit on the optical voucher
• A receipt will be written for the customer showing their charges, deposit, and balance due and all payments collected will be taken within the department
• Any information between the customer, another staff member, or the lab that is pertinent to each order becomes part of the customer’s permanent record
• The optician will also document any telephone messages or conversations that should be part of the customer’s permanent record
  
  

Indirect Care

• Finished orders received from the optical lab are verified by the optician for accuracy and quality
• All opticians will share in maintaining the frame boards and keeping the department clean and organized
• For customers that will be without the use of their eyeglasses while parts are ordered, a loaner frame or part is looked for to provide vision for the customer
• Each optician is given specific duties to do by the team lead that has assigned specifically for them
• The team lead may also assign duties that are to be shared as a group
• Orders frames, sundry items, eyeglass cases, and office supplies under the direction of the Team Lead
• Reconciles monthly lab and vendor statements for accuracy against individual invoices and faxes statements to accounting for payment
• Works with staff of other departments to help solve problems and provide quality and continuity of care
• Notifies customers when their order has arrived or updates them with information of any delays or any need to alter their order Education/Experience Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  
  

Healthcare and/or ophthalmic experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: Good communication skills; both written and verbal.

Friendly and helpful customer service skills.

Good computer skills.

Basic keyboarding and typing skills. Willingness to become a certified optician by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) preferred.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Must have good vision in order to see small details.

Manual dexterity is essential to do the job.

Ability to work with all levels of personnel.

Flexibility in hours.

Ability to work occasionally under stressful situations. If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015.

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. This job description indicates the general nature and level of work expected of the incumbent.
