Financial Counselor to meet with patients in person. Travel will be required 100% using own transportation to office locations each week to locations in Broward County and West Palm Beach, FL and Tamarac, FL with travel stipend added.
General Position Overview
At Advocate Radiation Oncology our mission is ‘patients first’. The Financial Counselor will be meeting with patients to discuss treatment costs as well as explain insurance benefits. The Financial Counselor will work directly with patients to ensure their understanding of insurance company benefits and financial responsibility. Providing a positive experience for patients is just one part of this role, it will also require interacting directly with insurance companies to liaise in understanding all medical insurance benefits, deductibles, co-pays, etc.; as well as working closely with the front desk, coder, and other teams.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interact professionally with patients, physicians, patient’s family, co-workers, and insurance company contacts
- Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for services with payers (private, commercial, or government agencies) through online payer portals, calling payers, and/or faxing requests, referrals, etc.
- Calculate and provide patients payment estimates based on the service schedule, contracted plan reimbursement allowances, benefits, and out of pocket thresholds – and may include developing a payment plan
- Compassionately provide insurance breakdowns to patients in regard to financial obligations, collect patient payments, and provide counselling and/or payment options or financing where applicable
- Accurately enter or update patient demographics, insurance coverage, and confirm effective and termination dates in all systems
- Process and collect co-payments and direct payments from financial aid services and patients
- Work in concert with the Billing Department and other front desk staff
- Provide optional financial aid services to patient when applicable; and work with local services and/or Medicaid as needed and comprehend and relay financial restrictions to patient
- Obtain appropriate authorization and work with the administrator on the appropriate agreements for any hospice or skilled nursing facility patients as well as hospital in-patients.
- Provide collections sheets and balance sheets
Qualifications / Requirements:
< 1-2 years of relevant experience interacting with patients and insurance companies to summarize payments, payment responsibilities, etc.
< Basic understandings of medical insurance benefits and medical terminology to relay to patients clearly
< Basic knowledge and understanding of In and Out of Network coverages for various healthcare plans
< Proficiency in electronic medical record and practice management software as well as QPP
· Expert MS Office skills required
· Interact directly with patients in person in both office locations
· Sense of urgency
· Social perceptiveness and service oriented
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Strong organizational and planning skills
· Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
· High School Diploma required; associates or bachelor’s degree preferred
