Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE) is a nonprofit law firm established over 50 years ago to ensure that the most vulnerable people in our communities have the same access to justice as people and companies that can afford to retain an attorney. ABLE and its partner law firm, Legal Aid of Western Ohio (LAWO), are the only law firms available for comprehensive legal representation in non-criminal matters for more than 425,000 people living, working, and raising their families in poverty in Northwest and West Central Ohio. ABLE advocates for and with financially disadvantaged individuals and communities to effectuate just and equitable policy changes that address the structural causes of poverty and to protect their right to fairness and justice in the legal system.
Job Summary:
The Staff Attorney in the Health and Public Benefits Practice Group will provide high-quality legal assistance to low-income clients to ensure access to healthcare and government benefits. This role includes direct client representation, strategic advocacy, community engagement, and public policy reform efforts to support individuals and families living in poverty.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned):
- Provide legal assistance through advice and counsel, negotiation, litigation, and administrative representation.
- Represent clients to secure healthcare and government benefits, addressing barriers to employment and economic independence.
- Advance strategic advocacy initiatives through litigation and policy reform designed to create lasting community impact.
- Develop expertise in substantive laws related to health care, government benefits, and poverty law.
- Maintain a reasonable caseload and manage advocacy projects effectively.
- Engage with community partners to identify and address recurring legal issues.
- Participate actively in practice group meetings and collaborative initiatives.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with courts, bar associations, and community organizations.
- Supervise paralegals or legal assistants as assigned.
- Complete administrative tasks, including time records, case reports, and funder reports.
SCOPE & IMPACT:
The position will contribute to ABLE’s mission by advocating for equitable access to justice, enhancing public benefits systems, and supporting vulnerable communities through direct legal services and systemic reform.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Membership in the Ohio Bar or eligibility for admission by motion or temporary certification.
- Excellent legal, communication, and computer skills.
- Commitment to legal services for low-income individuals.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in diverse, collaborative environments.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Legal experience in government benefits, healthcare law, or poverty law.
- Experience with community lawyering and public interest advocacy
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· May supervise paralegals or legal assistants as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· Work is performed in a normal office environment
· Must hold a valid driver's license and be insurable.
COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND WORK LOCATION:
ABLE is committed to providing an equitable work environment, including a commitment to pay equity. The annual salary range for this position starts at $68,000.00. ABLE offers comprehensive fringe benefits, including health insurance, annual leave, sick leave, supplemental language compensation, loan repayment assistance for attorneys through the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation and paid parental leave. This position can be based out of Toledo, with hybrid work possible.
