About the Role
As a Process Metallurgist , you will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and standardizing steel melting, refining, and teeming operations. You will work closely with production teams to improve processes, troubleshoot metallurgical issues, and enhance quality control standards . This role is ideal for someone who enjoys getting hands-on with steelmaking processes while also using analytical skills to drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities :
Process Optimization – Improve melt shop efficiency, raw material selection, and refining techniques to enhance quality and yield.
Quality Control & Assurance – Monitor chemical compositions, mechanical properties, and defect analysis to ensure product excellence.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting – Provide metallurgical expertise to production teams, solving process-related challenges in electric arc furnaces (EAF), ladle metallurgy, and continuous casting .
Continuous Improvement – Lead lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives , contributing to new product development and R&D efforts.
Safety & Compliance – Ensure adherence to ISO, ASTM, and environmental safety standards in a high-temperature steel manufacturing environment.
What We’re Looking For :
5-10 years of experience in steelmaking (melting, refining, teeming).
Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering .
Strong knowledge of metallurgy, steel alloys, furnace operations (EAF), and solidification processes .
Experience interpreting lab results, troubleshooting defects, and optimizing metallurgical processes .
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables), process modeling tools, and statistical analysis software (AIM preferred) .
A self-starter who is hands-on, collaborative, and eager to work in both lab and production environments .
Ability to work overnight shifts occasionally (about once per month).
Nice to Have :
Experience with ingot casting, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Green Belt certification .
Background in failure analysis, R&D, or metallurgical testing .
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with production, maintenance, and quality teams .
Schedule & Compensation :
Day Shift (early start around 5-6 AM) with occasional overnight coverage (1x per month).
Salary : $90K - $115K 10% bonus .
Located in Chicago, IL – easily commutable from surrounding areas.
