Position Summary
The Director of Compliance is a senior leader responsible for shaping Aeon's compliance strategy and ensuring organization-wide adherence to federal, state, and local housing regulations. This position leads a team that oversees compliance operations across Aeon's entire affordable housing portfolio and serves as the organization's subject matter expert in regulatory compliance, fair housing, and risk mitigation.
This role plays a critical part in aligning compliance processes with Aeon's strategic goals, collaborating closely with senior leaders in Property Operations, Asset Management, Development, Resident Services, and IT to ensure policies, systems, and practices support long-term portfolio health and resident stability. The Director of Compliance also leads organizational responses to audits and agency inquiries, provides executive-level reporting, and ensures Aeon remains a leader in compliance best practices.
This position reports to Aeon's Senior Director of Administration and Compliance.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Compliance Oversight
- Set the strategic direction for compliance operations across Aeon's portfolio, ensuring all properties meet or exceed regulatory expectations.
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of Aeon's compliance framework, aligning policies and procedures with long-term organizational goals.
- Provide executive-level guidance on regulatory risk and compliance trends; prepare reports and recommendations for the leadership team.
- Serve as Aeon's primary contact for investor, agency, and syndicator audits; oversee timely resolution of findings and corrective action plans.
- Monitor evolving affordable housing regulations and lead cross-functional efforts to implement organizational responses.
Training, Risk Management & Process Improvement
- Directly supervise the Compliance team and ensure clear accountability, performance management, and professional development.
- Partner with Property Operations, Asset Management, Development, Resident Services, and Learning & Development to embed compliance into all key operational workflows and training.
- Guide teams in interpreting and applying program requirements across diverse funding sources (LIHTC, HUD, HOME, RAD, Section 202/811, and others).
- Champion interdepartmental collaboration to ensure compliance processes support resident experience, operational efficiency, and equitable housing access.
Fair Housing Accessibility & Leadership
- Serve as Aeon's 504 Coordinator, overseeing compliance with accessibility standards and reasonable accommodation policies.
- Lead the development and enforcement of Aeon's fair housing strategy, ensuring consistency and equity across properties.
- Design and deliver internal guidance, documentation, and staff training related to nondiscrimination, reasonable accommodations, and best practices.
Systems, Data & Process Innovation
- Drive improvements in compliance systems by partnering with IT and data teams to optimize tools (e.g., Yardi, Fortress OS) and leverage analytics.
- Lead portfolio-wide file reviews and internal audits to identify systemic improvements and mitigate regulatory risk.
- Maintain documentation systems that ensure readiness for audits, certifications, and funding program requirements.
Skills & Qualifications
- 8 years of progressive experience in affordable housing compliance, with deep knowledge of LIHTC, HUD, HOME, and other federal/state programs.
- 4 years of leadership experience, including managing compliance teams and cross-departmental initiatives.
- Demonstrated success in regulatory strategy, risk management, and complex audit resolution.
- Strong working knowledge of fair housing laws, accessibility regulations, and 504 coordination.
- Experience with compliance and property management platforms (e.g., Fortress OS, Yardi, RealPage).
- Recognized industry certifications such as HCCP, COS, C3P preferred.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to connect regulatory requirements to operational and mission-driven goals.

- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 10lbs.
- Ability to reach above and below the shoulders.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to tour properties including but not limited to inspecting grounds, hallways, stairwells, and apartment homes.
- Ability to file, open and close file drawers, and enter data into a computer for extended periods of time.
Compensation, Hours & Location
This position has a range of pay of $90,000 to $110,000 per year, depending on experience and skillset. Aeon offers an impressive benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, retirement plan, generous paid time off and an employee assistance program.
This full-time position offers mostly Monday-Friday, daytime hours. Typical work schedules are 8:30am-5pm, but there is some flexibility in these hours to accommodate the needs of the position and the staff person. Variations to this schedule may occur given the needs of the position.
This position requires regular on-site work at our properties throughout the Twin Cities as well as our Central Office and off-site training facilities. This position may office remotely from time-to-time. When working remotely, the candidate is required to travel to and from Aeon properties for urgent or unplanned matters and for regularly planned on-site visits, trainings, and meetings. As such, candidates must either currently reside in and around the Twin Cities metro area, or plan to relocate to accommodate regular planned and unplanned on-site needs.
