POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design of simulated training devices and can perform in a dynamic prototyping environment. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, self-driven, hands-on, and a team player with a broad technical knowledge of mechanical design. This includes structural frames (weldments), sheet metal, control loading, component design, assemblies, and drawings. The primary mechanical design and analysis tool is Solidworks. On occasion, existing designs documented in AutoCAD or other CAD programs will be used as a baseline and updated using those programs. Works with vendors and suppliers, creates and presents designs, and mentors junior engineers for successful solutions.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with Systems and Electrical Engineering to gather a comprehensive view for the design and development of new training systems in accordance with Government/Industry standards and Customer specifications.  
  • Review, evaluate, research, and design to contractual specifications. Creates or modifies designs that meet the specified functional and performance requirements.
  • Produce mechanical designs and details that are manufacturable, ergonomic, reliable, and maintainable.
  • Create new parts, assemblies, and drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Work with and mentor mechanical engineers and drafters of multiple levels to develop comprehensive and cohesive mechanical designs.  
  • Create and present mechanical material to support customer meetings including requirement reviews, design reviews, and physical configuration audits.  
  • Provide support to manufacturing in the form of resolving design and documentation issues during production phases, and documenting changes by creating engineering change documents.
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with the mechanical CAD team to generate detail, assembly, installation, modification drawings.
  • Assist with preparation and cost estimation of new proposals.
  • Oversee assembly, modifications, and installations of your design.
  • Review designs for future enhancements.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum of three years of practical experience using parametric modeling and analysis software, preferably Solidworks.
  • Must have experience specifying proper manufacturing processes for new design fabrication including machining, welding, and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Must have experience with detailed mechanical mechanism design including specifying bearings, gears, pullies, press fits, tolerancing, motors, couplings, and fasteners.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing best practices including material selection, production processes, quality control, material costs and techniques for maximizing the manufacture.
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, sheet metal, composite, 3D printing, fastening, manufacturing / fabrication processes, and finite element analysis a plus. 
  • Knowledge and experience with simulators or simulator industry a strong plus.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with AutoCAD software highly desired.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, ensuring stakeholder expectations are managed appropriately.
  • Ability to work in a project-oriented, fast paced environment to meet deadlines.
  • The candidate must be able to work in a team environment, or independently, as necessary, and be a self-starter who will design and resolve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Proficiency in common business software (Microsoft Office – Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Visio).
  • Ability to work with project teams to successfully deliver new or modified functionalities.
  • Keen attention to detail to deliver solutions that meet business requirements and are operationally supportable.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

10 Years of Experience in Related Field

  • Due to contractual requirements must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be able to pass an initial background check.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an active Department of Defense security clearance. Employee/selected candidate will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information (as required).
  • Required to communicate in English (verbal and written).
  • Must be able and willing to travel to CONUS and OCONUS, as required.
  • Must be able to perform occasional overtime and alternative shifts, sometimes with short notice.
  • ASI is a Drug Free Workplace where applicants and employees are required to successfully pass pre-employment and Random drug testing.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
  • Typically, employees sit comfortably to do their work, interspersed by brief periods of standing, walking, bending carrying papers and books, and extensive periods requiring the use of computer terminals to accomplish work objectives.
  • Required to sit and use their hands and fingers to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard.
  • Required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. 
  • Additional skills may be required to perform additional task(s) specific to work location, department or line of business.
  • Must be travel via car and airplane.
  • Must be able to climb stairs to enter and exit a simulator.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is primarily performed in a traditional office environment consisting of offices and cubicles with low to moderate noise and bright or dim lighting.
