We have an exciting opportunity for a Exploration Scientist to join the team with Aerodyne Industries.

The Amentum JETS II contract seeks to fill an Exploration Scientist position in the NASA Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division as a part of the JETS II Science and Exploration Department. This candidate must reside or be willing to relocated to Houston, TX for on-site work requirements at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.

The Exploration Scientist will:

  • Integrate geoscience, planetary science, and engineering objectives into various test events at NASA facilities (on and off site) relevant to human and robotic exploration missions including Artemis, Gateway, Orion, the lander/ascent systems, spacesuits, EVA, and ISS
  • Coordinate with various teams of scientists, engineers, and other professionals in exploration science labs, test facilities, and in the field, in a highly dynamic and occasionally time-critical environment
  • Develop novel data collection methods and perform data analysis of science objectives within integrated testing environments
  • Work collaboratively across ARES laboratories and JSC facilities, including: Simulant Development Lab (SDL), Advanced Concepts for Exploration Lab (ACE), Image Science Analysis Lab (ISAL), Field Equipment for Exploration Training Lab (FEET), Science Mission Operations Room (SMOR), and other exploration, research, curation, and engineering facilities ​
  • Investigate science mission operations concepts, software tools, technologies, and methodologies for lunar and Mars mission scenarios
  • Provide technology and hardware development for small exploration projects with various scientists and engineers 
  • Develop funding proposals for submission to relevant scientific and technology grant solicitations opportunities 
  • Investigate science mission operations concepts, software tools, hardware development, technologies, and methodologies for lunar and Mars mission scenarios
  • Assist with logistics, planning, and execution for integrated test and training events at field locations
  • Other duties as required

Job Requirements

  • A BS degree and a minimum of 1 year of experience is typically required.
  • BS degree in a STEM field
  • Scientific or engineering laboratory experience
  • Ability to develop innovative work ideas and work without specific tasking
  • Proficient computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office suite, programming)
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work on a team and lead tasks when necessary​

 

Requisition Preferences:

 

  • Masters degree in a STEM field with applicable experience
  • Experience with a variety of tools and technologies
  • Successful grant proposal writing
  • Mission science integration and operations
  • Previous work with NASA and/or in the field of earth and planetary geology

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

 

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

 

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

 

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
