Job Description
 

**Note: SISD does not currently host J1 or H1B Visa teachers.**

Position Summary:

The AK-TRAILS Correspondence/Homeschool Teacher is responsible for facilitating student-centered learning in a flexible correspondence/homeschool setting within the Southeast Island School District. Under the supervision of the AK-TRAILS Correspondence/Homeschool Coordinator and Superintendent (or designee), this position provides instructional leadership, curriculum development, program coordination, and family engagement support. The teacher is a professional educator who demonstrates strong ethical behavior, effective communication, cultural responsiveness, and a commitment to lifelong learning as outlined in the Alaska Code of Ethics and the Standards for Alaska’s Teachers.


Reports to: AK-TRAILS Correspondence/Homeschool Coordinator and Superintendent or Designee

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Baccalaureate degree in appropriate academic field or verifiable
  2. Valid Alaska Type A Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsements.
  3. Certificate of Health signed by a licensed health care provider.
  4. Experience with homeschooling and correspondence education.
  5. Strong instructional leadership and curriculum development background.
  6. Experience with online learning platforms and distance delivery tools.
  7. Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  8. Proficient in data collection, program evaluation, and instructional technology.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school district related matters, students, families, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Other additional areas of endorsement.

Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  2. Ability to safely, regularly move items up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  3. Ability to move and position self as necessary to meet mission (e.g. stoop, kneel, crawl, bend, turn, reach, climb, balance, traverse, or other movements).
  4. Adherence to all district health and safety policies.
  5. Adherence to professional dress and appearance expectations as appropriate to assignment.
  6. Detect and accurately interpret information on a computer screen and printed matter.
  7. Communicate and accurately exchange information so that others may understand in person, via telephone, via audio/video conference, etc.

  1. Ensure  all instructional activities align with State of AK and District laws, regulations, and policies.
  2. Build and maintain positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and the public.
  3. Communicate effectively and respectfully with all stakeholders, both verbally and in writing..
  4. Demonstrate adaptability in response to evolving instructional needs and organizational priorities; willingly take on additional responsibilities as assigned.
  5. Maintain accurate records, reports, and forms as required, including grades, attendance, lesson plans, and district documentation.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency with instructional technology and digital learning platforms.
  7. Recognize and fulfill the role as an agent of the District in all work and communication to display a positive attitude and image of the District, to join cooperatively and positively in all District initiatives, and to support and comply with all given directions.
  8. Address concerns promptly and constructively through appropriate channels.
  9. Engage in ongoing professional learning and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.
  10. Participate positively, productively, and creatively in efforts to solve problems and improve the instructional practice of the District.
  11. Promote and participate in positive school-community partnerships and a supportive school climate.
  12. Demonstrated technology skills.
  13. Exhibit strong organizational, interpersonal, decision-making, and time management skills.
  14. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  15. Work independently while managing multiple priorities effectively.
 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Instruction & Curriculum:

 
  1. Support curriculum design, selection, and approval for home educators.
  2. Develop and evaluate Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for students in grades K–12.
  3. Support specialized instruction (e.g., SPED, AP, CTE, faith-based curricula).
  4. Differentiate instruction and promote inclusive, culturally responsive teaching.
  5. Facilitate and assess student learning using district-approved tools and platforms.
 

Family & Community Engagement:

 
  1. Serve as a liaison for families, students, and communities.
  2. Maintain open and effective communication with all stakeholders.
  3. Support and host family engagement activities (e.g., field trips, guest speakers).
  4. Encourage strong school-community partnerships.
 

Program Oversight & Technology:

 
  1. Monitor program compliance with district and state guidelines.
  2. Utilize digital platforms (e.g., Edgenuity, IXL, Zoom) for distance learning.
  3. Track student progress, reporting, submission verifications, and data entry.
  4. Assist in updating the AK-TRAILS website and social media presence.
 

Administrative & Fiscal:

 
  1. Assist in budgeting, purchasing, and managing student allotments.
  2. Assist in the inventory and materials distribution.
  3. Participate in program evaluation and improvement planning.
 

Professional Expectations:

 
  1. Support the mission of the Southeast Island School District.
  2. Demonstrate professionalism in all communication and conduct.
  3. Collaborate with other educators and staff.
  4. Participate in school improvement initiatives and district training.
  5. Maintain accurate records, forms, and reports.
  6. Meet all expectations outlined in district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and state regulations.

Employment Terms:
Certified Position. Salary and benefits determined via the Collective Agreement between the Southeast Island School District and Southeast Island Education Association.   Teachers will be evaluated in accordance with the Collective Agreement
