Position Overview
The general purpose of an auto salvage buyer position is to acquire salvage vehicles for the salvage yard through online auctions and occasional individual purchases. The buyer will research available auctions, analyze the vehicles for potential resale, and place bids within the assigned budget for the company. The buyer will also maintain accurate records of all purchases, including vehicle information, purchase price, and fees. The goal of the position is to acquire vehicles that can be sold for a profit while remaining within the company's financial guidelines.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Engage in Buying Practices
- Purchase salvage vehicles at the lowest possible cost while ensuring that they meet the company's quality standards.
- Participate in online auctions and place competitive bids on salvage vehicles by evaluating the condition of the vehicles and determining their potential value for parts.
- Negotiate and purchase salvage vehicles from private sellers.
- Consistently identify, evaluate, and purchase salvage vehicles at competitive prices.
- Maintain a consistent supply of quality salvage vehicles for the salvage yard while adhering to budgetary constraints.
- Arrange for transportation of purchased vehicles to the salvage yard.
- Monitor market trends and adjust purchasing strategies accordingly.
- Identifies and works to resolve issues.
2. Training and Support
- Trains and assists new purchasing team members in the adoption of Aesop procedures including online auctions, evaluation of vehicles, placing bids, negotiating, and purchasing of vehicles for salvage.
3. Administrative
- Maintain accurate records of all purchased vehicles, including acquisition costs, transportation expenses, and potential resale value.
- Research and identify potential sources for salvage vehicles, such as online auctions, local dealerships, and private sellers.
- Communicate with and assist the supervisor, titles associates, and other team members or departments as needed.
- Data entry into the inventory system.
4. Continuous Improvement
- Identifies and implements opportunities for continuous improvement including process standardizations.
5. Awareness and Delivery on KPIs
- Create monthly tracking to support roles KPI’s.
- Deliver and monitor contribution to cost savings, delivery accuracy, supplier compliance, and cycle time and quality standards.
6. Data Governance
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of Aesop’s tools and technology used to perform daily tasks.
- Follow established bidding procedures and guidelines when participating in auctions and purchasing vehicles from individuals.
7. Provide Industry Leading Customer Service
- Promote customer service within the Purchasing department for both internal and external customers.
- Maintain good relationships with auctioneers, brokers, and other industry stakeholders to ensure access to the best salvage vehicles.
- Support internal and external purchasing initiatives for buying-related activities.
- Support ad hoc projects, as needed by regional and hub purchasing leadership.
- Interact cross-functionally with Sales, Site Managers, and other departments.
- Responsible for building & and maintaining relationships with the region, hub, and other region team members.
8. Perform Other Duties as Assigned
Requirements:Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum three (3) years of directly related purchasing experience with demonstrated knowledge of various makes and models of vehicles, including their features, mechanical systems, and potential salvage value.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required with a commitment to act with an elevated level of professionalism during all transactions both internally and externally.
- Proficiency with reporting tools, IMS systems, Microsoft Office suite, online search engines, and other software and cloud-based evaluation tools.
- Must demonstrate good attention to detail and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to work independently and make quick informed decisions.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Must be able to work collaboratively across functions outside of Purchasing.
