What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Accounting position at Afognak Native Corporation?
The Director of Accounting is a financial leader in a multi-organization Alaska Native Corporation doing business with the federal government, as well as various commercial operations. This position requires a highly motivated individual focused on continual process improvements of handling day-to-day accounting functions and process workflows. This position will manage staff and processes of the accounting and administrative operations of the company’s financial applications in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, the regulations of the FAR and other regulatory agencies within the federal government contracting and technology industry.
- Assist Corporate Controller with the Company’s monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process to ensure reporting requirements are met.
- Complete the monthly, quarterly, entries for the Corporate Investment Fund Portfolio. and 409A deferred compensation account.
- Maintain the accounting for the Shareholder Settlement Trust and the Afognak Benefit Trust.
- Reconcile high level general ledger accounts such as Health and Workers Compensation IBNR accounts, 409A deferred compensation accounts, Corporate Investment Fund accounts, Fixed Assets, allocation accounts, etc.
- Assist Corporate Controller with maintaining and reconciling the lease accounting software to the general ledger.
- Assist Corporate Controller with maintaining and reconciling the fixed asset accounting software to the general ledger, including timely recording of work-in-progress as fixed assets.
- Review all monthly general ledger account reconciliations for accuracy and maintain the reconciliation software.
- Prepare monthly statement of cash flows by segment.
- Prepare monthly consolidated variance reports to executives, investors, and other stakeholders.
- Assist the Corporate Controller in the recording of the insurance allocations.
- Assist Vice President of Finance with annual budget preparation.
- Assist Commercial Controller with monthly closing process.
- Review monthly pool allocations.
- Analyze internal control gaps with GAAP standards or regulatory rules and assist with implementation of changes.
- Establish strong relationships with cross-functional peers and lead the Finance team to collaborate with others throughout the Company.
- Develop, enhance, and implement accounting policies and procedures to improve overall operation and efficiencies and reduce risk of the business.
- Maintain knowledge with complex accounting policies and assist with implementation of new accounting standard updates.
- Mentor direct reports and others to ensure development of staff.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; MBA/CPA/CMA designation preferred.
- Proven experience as Director of Accounting or similar role (minimum 5 years’ experience).
Required Experience:
- Extensive knowledge of financial consolidations and regulatory reporting to include but not limited to GAAP, FAR and DCAA regulations for a multi-organization.
- Accounting experience in a federal government contracting environment.
- Extensive knowledge with automated accounting processes
- Identify efficiencies and lead continuous improvement projects.
- Advanced proficiency with MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Advanced experience with mid-to-large project-based accounting software; Deltek Costpoint preferred.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and collaboration with corporate stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
