POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                                                             Organizing Intern

JOB CATEGORY:                                           Non-Exempt (Hourly)

STATUS:                                                         Part-Time, 21 hours per week for a total of 210 hours

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:                            Temporary

DIRECT SUPERVISOR:                                 Immigrant Rights Organizer

DOTTED LINE SUPERVISOR:                     Organizing and Advocacy Director

REGION/UNIT:                                             Northeast / US / Immigrant Rights Program            

LOCATION:                                                   Redbank, NJ, USA. Hybrid

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Organizing Intern will conduct outreach and support to AFSC’s clients, service providers, youth or DREAMers in Monmouth and Ocean County about the resources available for accessing higher education, supporting DACA and advance parole clinics, and engage youth in federal immigration organizing activities. The Organizing Intern will conduct group or individual meetings with young people and actively participate in youth coalitions. The goal of this internship is to help engage AFSC’s youth and affiliated DREAMers in current immigration legislative and advocacy activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Conduct outreach to AFSC’s existing DACA clients and young people at nearby schools.
  2. Share Know-Your-Rights and information about resources for accessing higher education.
  3. Conduct informational community presentations with community members and providers.
  4. Assist clinics and presentations conducted with communities.
  5. Support and participate in legislative meetings and activities with legislators when appropriate.
  6. Help coordinate youth events that aim at developing youth leadership and collective power.
  7. Generate social media content and support social media administration.
  8. Represent AFSC at youth gatherings.
  9. Meet regularly with supervisor.
  10. Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
  11. Operates safely in all conditions and follows policies and procedures.
  12. Other duties and projects as assigned.

SUPERVISORY / MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma required, and some college preferred.
  2. One year of experience with immigration systems or equivalent preferred.
  3. Fluency in Spanish required.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multicultural contexts.
  5. Familiarity with the youth challenges
  6. Good oral and written communication skills.
  7. Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public.
  9. Ability to work effectively and comfortably with Quaker principles.
  10. Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and workload.
  11. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends and to travel, as required.
  12. Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  13. Experience with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.
  14. Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  15. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
  16. Respect for Quaker values and testimonies. Knowledgeable and supportive of the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  17. Respect for and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, racial, gender and religious diversity and familiarity with non-violent approaches to problem solving.

COMPENSATION

This position is a non-exempt position, Salary Family: Intern. Job Code: Intern.  Starting hourly rate is $20 per hour.  There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
