American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor - Elementary Students - After School Program

Role Overview:
The ASL Instructor will teach basic American Sign Language to young learners in Elementary. This role includes introducing students to ASL vocabulary, basic sentence structure, and deaf culture, while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. The instructor will create engaging, hands-on lessons that help students build communication skills and gain an appreciation for sign language.
Key Responsibilities
- ASL Instruction: Teach students basic ASL vocabulary, fingerspelling, and simple phrases.
- Cultural Awareness: Introduce students to aspects of deaf culture, promoting respect and understanding.
- Interactive Learning: Design fun and interactive activities that engage young learners and make language learning enjoyable.
- Classroom Management: Ensure a safe and respectful learning environment for all students, encouraging participation and inclusivity.
- Progress Tracking: Monitor and assess students' progress, adapting lessons to meet their needs and ensure their growth in ASL skills.
Qualifications
- ASL Proficiency: Strong knowledge of American Sign Language, with the ability to teach basic vocabulary and concepts to young children.
- Teaching Skills: Experience teaching or working with young children, particularly in an educational or enrichment setting.
- Educational Background: Formal education in ASL or a related field is preferred but not required. Relevant experience in teaching ASL to children is equally valued.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and motivational skills, with a passion for making learning fun for young students.
- Organizational Abilities: Ability to create and follow lesson plans, manage classroom dynamics, and ensure that students are engaged and progressing.
