The Hospice Medical Director directs the medical aspects of the Hospice’s patient care program. Serves as consultant and advisor to the Director, offering their expertise to assess and interpret medical problems. The Hospice physician serves as consultant to the Interdisciplinary Group

The Medical Director oversees the implementation of the entire physician, nursing, social work, therapy and counseling areas within Hospice to ensure that these areas consistently meet patient and family needs

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities
Clinical
- Oversees the implementation of physician, nursing, social work, therapy and counseling areas within Hospice to ensure these areas consistently meet patient and family needs
- Responsibility for medical component of the Hospice’s patient care program
- Participates in and acts as a medical resource to the IDG and Hospice Leadership
- Reviews the clinical information for each hospice patient and provides written certification that it is anticipated that the patient’s life expectancy is 6 months or less if the illness runs its normal course
- Before the recertification period for each patient the Medical Director or physician designee must review the patient’s clinical information
- Is available to patients on a 24-hour basis to manage their terminal illness and medical needs as requested
- Collaborates with Hospice administration, staff, and other practitioners to develop and implement resident care policies and procedures that reflect current standards of practice as well as those governed by regulatory bodies.
- Participates in performance improvement/quality assurance activities, coordination of care committees, and medical staff meetings.
- Continues professional development through in-service education, workshops, conferences and self-study necessary to maintain current knowledge applicable to the position.
- Maintains understanding of strategic initiatives set forth by AgeRight Hospice
- Collaborates with leaders to establish and maintain levels that complement both clinical outcomes and financial expectations.
- Available to speak and present at educational events sponsored by the Agency
The Medical Director oversees the implementation of the entire physician, nursing, social work, therapy and counseling areas within Hospice to ensure that these areas consistently meet patient and family needs
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
- Unencumbered state license to practice in the state of Oregon.
- Two or more years of direct work experience with geriatric population and/or patients in Hospice or Palliative Care.
- Board-certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (preferred)
