Summary:
Deseret Cattle & Citrus is seeking a Cattle Unit Manager to oversee the care of cattle, horses, pastures, equipment, fencing and staff at the assigned farm property. The Cattle Unit Manager works closely with the Ranch Manager to evaluate and develop ranch infrastructure and adopt company operating procedures to the operation. A successful Manager is a hands-on-herdsman and an effective leader.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure ranch objectives and company strategic vision are understood and shared with staff.
- Participate in ranch strategic planning process and facilitate the accomplishment of key initiatives.
- Where applicable, meet target gains on stockers and replacement heifers during all development phases.
- Timely accomplishment of the activities listed on the Cattle Calendar of Events.
- Operate at or below annual cow, stocker, or replacement heifer cost goals.
- Make recommendations on annual capital and operating budgets.
- Complete annual 3-year resource plan for the unit. Develop and follow an annual grazing plan.
- Effectively utilize unit labor which includes professional development, training and educating employees on ranch procedures and policies.
- Champion a best-in-class safety program by promoting consistent safety training attendance, compliance with all OSHA and company/industry policies, as well as encouraging the use of PPE and adherence to all other EHS programs.
- Ensure required reports, including inventory, are maintained and accurate in a timely manner.
- Maintain and continuously improve property in addition to safeguarding the unit.
- Represent the local ranch, Deseret Ranches and AgReserves professionally at all times.
- Build strong professional relationships with all members of the Cattle Division, as well as lease holders, other ranch customers, the local community, governmental agencies, and the cattle industry.
Qualifications:
- 5- 10 years' experience in the cattle industry with experience performing procedures normal to animal husbandry including castration, euthanasia, vaccinating, dehorning, ear tagging, ear notching, branding, and taking blood samples.
- 1-2 years' experience in a supervisory or leadership development role.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Advanced degrees (Bachelor, Master's) in Animal Science or related field desired.
- Proficient at safely handling cattle (BQA Certified).
- Skilled in saddling and riding a horse. Ability to ride for 6-8hrs per day.
- Confidently operate a tractor with implements, hooking up and detaching the implements.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid in-state Driver's License within 6 months of start.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job which includes lifting and carrying repetitively up to 75lbs, push/pull/dragging up to 200lbs, and walking/standing for 9-12hrs per day.
- Able to work outside in year-round weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain.
- Must be able to accommodate the regular farm schedule of 45-50 hours per week, which may include days, nights, holidays, and weekends, per business needs.
