Agri-Valley Communications, Inc. (AVCI) is the parent company of Pigeon Telephone, Thumb Cellular, Agri-Valley Services and the AVS Tech Team. Headquartered in Pigeon, Michigan, the family-owned corporation is focused on providing communication and technology services to rural Michigan communities, including those in the Thumb and Northern regions of the state.
The Location Technician is responsible for identifying and marking Pigeon Telephone Company buried fiber optic cable and copper as well as other utilities by referencing utility prints and using specific locating equipment. The position requires a high level of accuracy in order to minimize accidental damage to the Pigeon Telephone and other utility networks due to construction activities.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reads and understands utility maps, prints, and aerial imagery to assist in identification of underground fiber and copper assets.
- Operates and maintains handheld detection equipment in the designed manner.
- Marks the location of underground copper and fiber assets on roadways, private property, and other locations, as appropriate and needed, using required spray paints, flags and other equipment.
- Periodically removes and replaces manhole lids, weighing between 100- and 300- pounds, using a manhole cover removal tool.
- Maintains daily contact with utility managers, team leaders, homeowners, and contractors discussing locate issues.
- Performs outside plant route maintenance activities, of which includes digging holes for posts and removing and replacing marker signs.
- Acts as backup to field construction crew when requested by manager.
- Communicates with team leaders, customers, and contractors to coordinate daily tasks to prioritize work activities to determine travel route and timeliness.
- Maintains plant facilities, company vehicle and communicates changes or issues to management.
- Performs other plant functions as directed.
- Performs job duties within Company health and safety requirements.
- Other duties as requested or required by management.
Travel Requirements: Daily travel throughout service area is required.
Work Environment: This job operates outdoors in all weather conditions and all types of terrain.
Dress should be appropriate for outdoor work and must meet safety requirements.
Work Schedule: This is a full-time regular position where hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional overtime may be necessary as requested by management. This position requires on-call responsibilities
