JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Meter Technician Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Reporting to: Asset Manager Pay Grade: Based on Experience
Department: Meter Readers Work Status: Full-Time
Hours Per Week: 40 Location: Business Office & Field
JOB SUMMARY: The Agua SUD meter technician is responsible for the accurate and timely reading and recording of water meters to facilitate customer billing. Work is performed on assigned routes in accordance with established standards for number and accuracy of reads. An employee is expected to detect and report atypical conditions, such as: identifying damaged, malfunctioning, and tampered meters, and detecting and reporting leaks, double connections, illegal connection, etc. Various customer service functions are performed in addition to reading water meters.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
All of the following are to be performed while adhering to Agua SUD operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.
Reading Meters:
- Knowledge of assigned meter reading route within established performance standards
- Read water meter registers
- Compare meter numbers with numbers in Re-read reports
- Record all readings
- Monitor compound dials to verify operating correctly
- Monitor meters for damage, tampering, and broken seals
- Review extreme high and low readings and inform customer of problem
- Recheck readings to determine abnormal consumption patterns
- Refer problem reads/meters to Supervisor for follow-up
- Analyze possible cause for consumption fluctuation
- Inspect for water leaks
- Sequences the order of the route to increase reading efficiency
- Lock all meters on list
- Open meters throughout service area
- Inform office of any leaks
Maintenance of Utility Sites:
- Trim brush, trees and shrubs from water meters
- Cleans meter boxes that have been filled with dirt or which may house snakes, bees or spiders
- Clean out ground under angle stop
Meter Technician Job Description
- Spray for bees in meter boxes to provide safe access to meter dials
- Perform repeat visits to inaccessible meters
- Replace damaged or malfunctioning meters
Communication and Assistance:
- Respond to requests for reading verification
- Deliver bills to post office
- Assist other departments in locating meters
Other duties and Special Projects may be assigned

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High school diploma or GED, and one-year related experience involving considerable outdoor exposure and physical exertion.
- Work experience reading meters is highly desirable.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos.
- Able to write and print numbers legibly.
- Able to communicate verbally.
- Ability to perform mental math involving addition and subtraction accurately and quickly
- Ability to accurately read and record data from various types of meter dials
- Ability to work in inclement weather
- Ability to work on-call, on evening, weekends, or holidays
- Ability to work with angry and difficult customers
- Ability to work independently in absence of supervision
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job,
- The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or lift.
- The employee will be entering and exiting vehicle frequently.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job,
- The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to extreme weather conditions.
- The employee will often work in slippery conditions and tight work spaces.
- There is also frequent exposure to possible vicious dogs, snakes, and/or insect bites.
