Job Description

Production Supervisor

As the Production Supervisor you will Lead the safe and continuous operations of the Paper Mill including Stock Prep, Machines and Roll Wrap to ensure production meets all safety, health, hygiene, environmental, quality and efficiency standards.

Production Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Safety:
    • Lead by example and follow all mill safety policies
    • Follow up on all safety and property damage incidents reported on shift and document
    • Perform safety audits as required
    • Follow up on any corrective actions as assigned


  • Health and Hygiene:
    • Ensure a clean, neat, and organized workplace following all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and BRC Policies
    • To follow the manufacturing and hygiene processes, procedures and policies applicable to the position’s area of responsibility in order to meet and maintain the safety, quality and regulatory compliance for each grade of paper
    • Follow up on any corrective actions from audits as assigned
    • Perform BRC/GMP audits for team member compliance


  • Environmental:
    • Communicate effectively with Waste Water Treatment Plant with any activity that might upset the process
    • Look for ways to reduce flows to the sewer


  • Quality:
    • Communicate with the team any quality concerns by grade
    • Follow up on corrective actions or training from internal or external quality losses with the team
    • Actively work to troubleshoot and correct quality concerns with the team as they arise


  • Efficiency:
    • Review cost of raw materials and try to minimize chemical costs and maximize broke if customer specifications are being met
    • Ensure crews are working to achieve all standards for the customer and the mill such as quality, speed, etc.


  • Leadership:
    • Lead the hour-to-hour or day-to-day function of each department and do all necessary work that is required to meet this directive.
    • Work with all team members to achieve highest performance possible through coaching, caring and accountability
    • Follow up with each person training on your crews to ensure they have the necessary materials and are supported to be successful in their new role each time.
    • Participate in training knowledge checks as available
    • Help On-board new hires and have regular contact with them that are on your shift
    • Research, write and follow up on maintenance work requests.
    • Communicate effectively and timely with all stakeholders for: Break-In work, Machine Issues, Shift-hand Off and Crew/Personnel Concerns


  • Administrative:
    • Understand all the tools to check operations, correct operator errors and check efficiencies (Proficy, PARCview , JDE, Reports Now, SharePoint , etc.)
    • Document all records of conversation
    • Participate in shift exchanges with detailed notes


  • Development:
    • Attend technical or leadership seminars or classes
    • Participate in maintenance down days, Product Development trials, Kaizen events, Capital installation, etc.

Skills For Your Success

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years' experience in Paper Machine Operations.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as well as teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of MS Office
  • Proven leadership record of accomplishment of directing others.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and meet budget.
  • Advocate and champion for Maintenance Best Practices (MBP)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and high mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple critical assignments simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working in a union environment.
  • The flexibility to work additional hours during the week, on weekends, or outside of regular office hours as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to create succession planning.
  • Make best practices common practice through networking with other Ahlstrom facilities.
