JOB SUMMARY:
Pathology Laboratory Assistants are non-licensed personnel with training in the area of cytology preparation and who assists the Pathologist with related functions in the Pathology Laboratory. Specific duties consists of the following: receives, properly identifies, and accessions all specimens for cytology study and processes same by centrifugation, filtering, cytospin, slide, and cell block preparation. Picks up specimens from Surgery following established procedures and properly identifies and accessions these specimens and labels corresponding cassettes. Receives and accessions all biopsy specimens and prepares cassettes for grossing by pathologist. Prepares cytology smears using appropriate stain. Prepares specimens submitted for frozen section accessioning specimens, labeling cassettes, and slides. Assists radiologist in preparation of smears from fine needle aspirations performed under CT guidance as requested. Assists Pathologist and Oncologists on staff with bone marrow procedure and processes bone marrow specimens. Assists Pathologist at cutting table with the gross examination of surgical specimens. Keeps Pathology laboratory in a clean and organized condition, maintains inventory of supplies in Pathology Lab for as long as possible and disposes of tissue specimens in accordance with guidelines established by hospital per OSHA regulations. Is responsible for inventory of supplies in Pathology Lab including specimens bottles for use by physicians’ offices and other hospital departments and orders supplies through Pathology and Clinical Laboratory supervisors. Properly records all CAP workload units fro cytology that are not automatically tallied by the hospital computer. Performs related functions as requested by Medical Director or Supervisor. Practices established laboratory and hospital safety protocol including Universal Precautions at all times.
