Overview

Able to work in all basic functions of a CLS in the main lab, blood bank and microbiology. Performs quality control procedures for routine and stat testing of patient samples. Maintains records; performs and records instrument maintenance; troubleshooting instrument and sample problems; regularly utilizes the lab computer for various aspects of daily work; verifies completion of work using the computer. Able to work independently in a generalist capacity while adhering to standard lab practices.

Responsibilities

Regularly performs laboratory procedures in one or more of the scientific sections of the Clinical Lab.

  • As a specialist; performs all routine and other procedures.
  • As a float; performs all routine procedures.
  • Correct procedures done and 100% accuracy within procedure limits, and turnaround as stated in the procedure manual.
  • Sets priorities for the workload to assure that we meet our TAT standards for our ER initiative.

Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains records. Performs and records instrumentation.

  • 100% compliance with QC protocols for running controls and accepting results.
  • The supervisor is always notified of out of control, discrepant or unexpected results in a timely manner.
  • Records are accurate and up to date.
  • 100% compliance with instrument maintenance procedures.

Participates in training of new employees.

  • Participation as instructed by supervisor.
  • Able to complete their assignments while closely supervising the trainee.
  • Ensures that the department is properly supervised when assigned the responsibilities of the In-Charge CLS.

Troubleshoots instrument problems.

  • Troubleshoots with the help of the hotline.
  • Troubleshoots with the instrument manual.
  • Able to independently detect and resolve instrument issues.
  • Offers to assist in instrument repairs.

Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed.

  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform clerical functions at the reception area.
  • Able to log in specimens without errors.
  • All tests completed are properly charged.
  • Maintains records in he Laboratory accurately and to Joint Commission Standards.
  • Able to take the lead in the front office if necessary and manage the staff when in charge.
  • Checks in Pathology specimens, corrects any incomplete orders and verifies proper preservatives.

Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work. Verifies completion of work by various computer programs.

  • Familiar with all pertinent computer procedures and contingency procedures.
  • Verifies that all assigned work is completed 100% of the time.

Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel, regarding laboratory procedures, results, etc.

  • Communicates in a clear, courteous and professional manner.

  • Follows established hospital and department policies.
  • No more than 2 written substantiated complaints representing a reach of policy, procedure or professional behavior since last evaluation.

  • Communicates well with supervisor reporting problems with equipment, supplies, or procedures. Requests assistance as appropriate.

  • Consistently projects positive professional image through appearance and behavior.
  • Attends 75% of staff meetings or reads and initials minutes.
  • Completes assigned work within shift.

  • As observed by representatives of management, all interactions are conducted in a professional manner.
  • Verbal and written feedback from patients, family members/significant others, medical staff, visitors and co-workers indicates behavior conducive to positive guest relations.
  • Consistently exhibits appropriate phone protocol (e.g., assists co-workers when need is observed or upon request, offers constructive suggestions rather than complaints).
  • Consistently displays cheerful and positive attitude.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Completes annual safety updates within established time frames.
  • Completes general and departmental orientation within established time frames.
  • Attends 100% of in-service programs.
  • Maintains licensure/certification as appropriate.
  • Attends 75% of staff meetings or reads and initials minutes.
  • Keeps up with reading memos without reminders.
  • Does continuing education programs on time and with good test scores.

Performance Improvement

  • Consistently strives to understand, anticipate and meet the needs, expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and other "customers".
  • Errors, inefficiencies and inaccuracies are brought to management's attention with suggestions for improvement.
  • Develops innovative solutions to departmental problems.
  • Identifies and implements methods of controlling costs or generating revenue while providing maximum value to both the patient/customer and the hospital.
  • Maximizes efficiency in all departmental operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Sciences with Medical Technology Internship
  • Minimum Experience: 2 years acute hospital experience preferred
  • Required Certification/Registration: CA Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist, ASCP Certification preferred
