AHRC NYC is seeking a Director of Advocacy Services. The Director of Advocacy Services is responsible for supporting AHRCs mission by developing and implementing internal and external advocacy efforts on behalf of students served and their families / caregivers and by actively supporting full community inclusion. In particular this position works to uphold the rights of students receiving special education services from the NYC Department of Education and other ID / DD service providers ensuring that students and families experiencing difficulties in accessing appropriate services are welladvised and ably represented.

Salary : $100000 $120000 per year

ESSENTIAL Responsibilities

  • Develop and conduct strategic operations aligning advocacy program priorities with AHRCs overall mission and goals.
  • Provide representation at advocacy meetings with education and other ID / DD service providers ensuring timely follow up with providers and family / caregivers participating in these meetings.
  • Seek and respond to concerns and interests of students served their families / caregivers and other stakeholders as well as deliver information and referral services as needed.
  • Conduct advocacy training for parents / caregivers siblings and professionals.
  • Ensure advocacy services meet high standards of excellence and quality by competently supervising staff and developing implementing and analyzing assessment tools that measure constituent satisfaction and advocacy outcomes.
  • Actively participate in agencys Incident Review Committee and conduct investigations of incidents or sensitive situations as requested as well as actively participate in Human Rights Committee.
  • Represent agency on various advocacy coalitions.
  • Develop and maintain advocacy relationships at state and local levels to ensure legislative and regulatory attention to the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Complete timely accurate and comprehensive reports on program services for internal and external purposes.

Qualifications :

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters in Special Education Social Work or related human services field required.
  • Required expertise in Federal IDEA OPWDD 633 NYS and NYC Department of Education regulations special education law and guidelines as well as CPSE / CSE processes.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as advocate for students with developmental or intellectual disabilities required.
  • Experience in supervising line staff preferred.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively as well as establish and maintain relationships with students family members and external professional staff.  This includes ability to present verbal information simply and concisely demonstrate effective public speaking presence be a skilled listener and demonstrate excellent writing skills.
  • Must have solid organizational and multitasking skills and proven ability to make independent decisions set appropriate program priorities and handle timesensitive and / or stressful situations.
  • Bilingual language skills highly desirable.
  • Flexibility in occasionally working outside of normal business hours required.
  • NYS Drivers License helpful.
