Key Position Details: *** Rotates to United, Mercy and Abbott Northwestern*** Day Shifts -7:30am-4:00pm SEIU-represented, benefit-eligible position Occasional weekends Job Description: Performs moderate and complex specimen procedures in the cytopathology specialty of the pathology department and assists in the collection of biopsies. May be accountable as a key operator for a technical work area, including oversight of regulatory compliance, new method validation, technical procedures, and inventory control. Serves as a trainer for new employees and assists with direct observation of staff for annual competency program. Functions as a liaison to system Technical Specialist and may serve as Charge Tech in absence of manager. CLIA Role: Testing Personnel Moderate complexity testing Testing Personnel High Complexity testing. Principle Responsibilities Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures. Prioritizes work assignments/tasks. Assesses specimens acceptability and appropriately triages to a pathologist. Performs analytical tests. Detects and differentiates the presence or absence of disease in gynecologic and non-gynecologic samples. Independently renders diagnosis and signs out gynecologic specimens deemed as “negative for intraepithelial lesion” or which contain microorganisms not requiring pathologist review. Refers abnormal cases to the pathologist. Evaluates results for accuracy, and resolves complex test problems. May provide oversight as a key operator of a work area. Performs and documents required instrument maintenance and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action. Ensures appropriate record keeping and retention. May assist with procedure writing, validation and implementation of new methodologies. Performs proficiency testing as assigned. Participates and assists in the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program. Accurate and timely collection and processing of specimens. Reviews orders and verifies correct patient identification. Assists in the collection of biopsies and provides rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of specimen acceptability. Prepares specimens for analysis ensuring appropriate identification throughout the process. Administrative duties. May function as Charge Tech in absence of manager or senior staff. May function as contact for customers in absence of technical specialist or manager. Trains others in work area(s). Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects or committees as assigned. May assist with department scheduling. Stocks, rotates and requests supplies on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area. Performs various clerical duties. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related science from a regionally accredited institution and Vocational or Technical Training from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited cytotechnology program CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1423 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1491 Technologist qualifications on or before February 28, 1992 Licenses/Certifications Cytotechnologist, CT certification from a recognized agency such as ASCP required within 180 Days Physical Demands Light Work: Lifting weight Up to 20 lbs. occasionally, Up to 10 lbs. frequently Pay Range Pay Range: $40.61 to $52.44 per hour The pay described reflects the base hourly pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
