We are seeking Deputy Director to join our team!
The Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Connecticut) is a association that serves as a resource to architects and the public. Our membership of over 1,500 is comprised of architects, architectural designers working towards licensure, students, and professionals in allied fields. Our members share a passion for architecture and a desire to change the world through the power of design.
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Director is responsible for both internal and external responsibilities, ranging from managing marketing and communications, membership relations, advocacy, and project management. Working closely with the ED, staff, and external stakeholders, the Deputy Director will assist in implementing and assessing the strategic plan, ensure the successful execution of initiatives, and uphold AIA Connecticut’s standards of excellence.
Core Responsibilities:
Management & Administration
- Leadership & Planning: Partner with the ED on internal leadership activities, including human resources, administrative oversight, and organizational planning.
- Strategic Plan Implementation: Collaborate with staff to implement goals outlined in the organization’s strategic plan and regularly evaluate progress to inform future priorities and budget decisions.
- Operational Efficiency: Identify best practices to improve internal systems while balancing immediate needs and long-term objectives.
- Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and present reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors on organizational performance, project status, and budget considerations.
- Team Supervision: Assist in the evaluation of personnel in Events, Programming, and Administration. Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
- Organizational Representation: Represent AIA Connecticut at industry conferences and professional association meetings, and fulfill all additional duties as assigned by the ED.
Marketing & Communications
- Strategy & Execution: Develop and execute a cohesive marketing and communications strategy to enhance internal and external branding, public relations, and educational programming support.
- Event Promotion & Coordination: Plan and implement communications for events directed at external audiences, including the creation of invitations, scheduling of speakers, event signage, and on-site support.
- Content Creation & Oversight: Direct the planning, development, and implementation of all marketing and communications channels, including social media, print and digital content, website updates, email marketing, newsletters, and public relations efforts.
- Campaign Development: Collaborate with program staff to create effective messaging and campaigns for various programs, ensuring brand consistency and high engagement.
- Relationship Building: Maintain strong relationships with committees and knowledge communities. Partner with internal teams to stay informed on the full range of AIA Connecticut’s programs and initiatives.
- Promotion & Collaboration: Foster collaboration among staff to effectively market events and programs.
Membership Engagement
- Member Relations: Build and manage all aspects of member relations, including maintaining regular outreach to AIA and Allied Members.
- Budgeting & Administration: Develop, manage, and administer budgets related to communication, events, programs, and marketing activities.
- Program Evaluation: Establish an evaluation system for all member programs and services to ensure they align with member needs and organizational goals.
- Member Survey Implementation: Design and administer annual membership surveys to gather feedback and inform continuous improvements.
- Additional Responsibilities: Complete other projects, reports, and tasks assigned to support the needs of the organization.

Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 15 years with strong marketing and communications experience and events, with demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities and budgets simultaneously. Advocacy knowledge a plus.
- Strategic Thinking: Strong capacity for strategic planning, problem-solving, and translating complex concepts into actionable strategies.
- Communication Excellence: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with proven success in content creation, public speaking, and media relations.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in MS Office, relational databases, Google Analytics, and marketing software tools.
- Team Leadership: Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching high-performing teams, including conflict resolution and negotiation expertise.
- Collaboration & Relationship-Building: Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain successful relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Project Management: Skilled at managing multiple projects and timelines. Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational abilities.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Adept in generating innovative solutions, handling crisis communications, and exercising sound judgment.
Additional Requirements:
- Excellent computer skills.
- Must be able to work evenings and Saturdays when applicable.
- Must have reliable transportation, insurance, and valid driver's
- Must have the ability to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. without assistance.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time and, when necessary, move frequently. and quickly around large areas.
