How you will create an impact
The Head of Technical Claims, NA Liability will report to the Head of Technical Claims, North America, and is responsible for technical oversight of Liability Claims in North America. This position is responsible for driving Liability Claims technical excellence and is a recognized subject matter expert within and outside of the Claims function in the relevant business lines. This position collaborates directly with senior claims, underwriting, actuarial, legal and compliance leaders to ensure effective development and management of strategic objectives and policies for those lines of business, and is responsible for leading the development of clear and effective strategies for resolving high complexity and severity claims, for identifying claim and coverage trends, and for driving technical excellence and internal business partner communication within specific business lines. The role is also responsible for setting strategic vision for the approach to and resolution of these claims, driving claims consistency by product, partnering with underwriting on trends and exposures and working with actuarial to develop a robust and consistent approach to claims exposure assessment and reserving.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing oversight of complex, high severity claims across Liability, focusing on overall claims consistency, thought leadership, best practices, lessons learned and technical trainings.
- Maintain all necessary State licensing.
- Assist claims professionals and managers with coverage determinations, drafting of coverage correspondence and litigation management.
- Monitoring of, and escalation/referral for guidance, direction and authority on, matters involving high severity and/or complex coverage issues and matters involving high profile insureds or events or of significant impact.
- Active involvement in highest severity or high profile Liability claims.
- Work closely with underwriting related to closeout file review requests.
- Claims trend and legal development identification, analysis and reporting.
- Providing oversight and management of systemic and quasi-systemic claim issues related to Liability Claims; generating periodic reports and updates regarding exposures to senior claims, actuarial and underwriting management.
- Communication of, education and training regarding existing or developing coverage issues to ensure accuracy and consistency of position/approach.
- Identifying and supporting the development of strong technical performers.
- Developing a collaborative and proactive approach with Liability claim managers that ensures “more eyes on the file” for select transactions, severe losses and on certain complex claims.
- Supporting ongoing technical claims improvement projects through initiatives to foster an environment of continuous improvement.
- Building and maintaining strong and effective relationships with key internal and external business partners to ensure that service delivery meets appropriate standards and expectations.
- Review, coordination and direction of watchlist and pipeline management in Global Tracker.
- Assistance in, preparation for, and where appropriate, participation in internal LOB reviews (underwriting profitability reviews, DVRs); support for, and where appropriate, participation in, operations-focused actions and reviews.
- Policy language and significant endorsement language review and comment in relevant business lines.
- Driving a culture that promotes collaboration, diversity and inclusion.

Additional Requirements:
- At least 15 years claims handling and leadership experience, preferably including oversight over multiple products and geographies, in depth knowledge of the insurance industry, its practices and operations; technical expertise in the Liability line of business.
- Strong commercial mindset with a proven track record of making sound judgments backed by strong analytical skills and business acumen; ability to exercise professional judgment and assume responsibility for decisions which have an impact on business goals.
- Self-directed with ability to motivate and effectively influence others.
- Strategic Leadership skills in developing vision and purpose, driving for results and leading effective teams.
- Skilled leader of change; versatile, client focused, results oriented.
- Demonstrated expert claims experience, business savvy, analytical and quantitative skills.
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
- Ability to effectively interact, communicate and build trusting partnerships with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication, influencing capability and an ability to build credibility quickly.
- Ability to drive and achieve results, with ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives;
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and other business related software systems

For positions based in New York, the base salary range is $180,000-$235,000. For positions based in New Jersey, the base salary range is $180,000-$235,000. In addition, the position is eligible for a bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable incentive plan.
