Qualifications/Requirements: In this position the primary purpose is to perform limited to moderately complex duties and tasks in the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers and boiler auxiliary equipment and to perform preventive maintenance on them. Also, this position is to assist higher grade personnel, or within limits, independently performs the tasks above. Starts, operates, adjusts and maintains manual or automatic controlled boilers and auxiliary equipment in a steam or high temperature water boiler plant that requires continuous attention. Prepares or instructs lower graded operators to prepare boilers for light off by configuring and positioning controls, switches, pumps, valves and dampers correctly. Operates plant to maintain efficient combustion levels and ensure compliance with air pollution laws or regulations. Monitors, adjusts and controls all phases of a boiler plant operations through the use of manual, automatic or microprocessor controls or control systems. Operates dampers, induced and forced draft fans, bottom and fly ash removal equipment, heat exchanges, pumps, relief valves, water treatment equipment and other similar equipment. Regulates fuel feed and water levels to maintain required steam pressure or temperatures. Checks flame for correct color and shape and makes adjustments for proper combustion. Makes scheduled rounds of plant and checks feed water regulators, flowmeters, flue gas temperature, various gauges, stack emissions, fuel feed and conveyor equipment, water level indicators, pressure control valves and safety equipment to determine if boilers are operating within prescribed limits. Operates soot blowers to clean fireside tube walls and blows down water columns to verify that there are no false water level indications. Maintains constant observation of flowmeters and charts to determine how much steam or hot water is being produced, whether it is meeting or exceeding demands, rate of fuel consumption, etc. May be responsible as the operator in charge of the complete plant. The operator in charge is responsible for following written instructions from a supervisor or the operator in charge on the previous shift. Performs various operational repairs, seasonal and preventive maintenance on boilers, heat exchangers and associated auxiliary equipment. Makes periodic checks of all equipment and visually and physically checks meters, shafts, linkage, bearings, motors, belts, turbine and electric pumps, etc., to assure proper operations. Performs routine preventive maintenance and minor operational repairs such as greasing and oiling moving parts of machinery, adjusting packing glands, valves, air filters, grates and other similar types of equipment. Cleans and paints equipment, pipes, etc., as necessary or as directed. Assists boiler plant maintenance journeymen in more difficult repairs and maintenance. Performs routine repair, maintenance and overhaul tasks during seasonal shutdown and assists in the more difficult tasks. Replaces defective items such as valves, motors, dampers, grates, linkage and pumps and repacks valves and pumps with appropriate material. Visually examines and operationally tests electric, electronic, pneumatic and mechanical systems and equipment using specialized test equipment. Operates, repairs and performs regular checks of industrial water treatment equipment installed to provide suitable quality water for boiler operation. Collects water samples or directs lower grade workers to collect and test feedwater, boiler water and condensate using standard chemical tests. Determines the treatment and chemicals to be used to control chemical concentrations, remove impurities and entrapped gases or stabilize fluctuating water conditions in the boiler. Determines appropriate treatment to control corrosion, scaling and chemical concentrations. Takes meter readings and records and enters in log for record purposes and reference points for maintenance personnel. Uses and maintains tools and equipment. Performs visual and operational checks of equipment prior to and during operation on a continuing basis and reports any discrepancies noted. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing, such as safety shoes, glasses, ear protection, face masks and/or hard hats. Follows federal and state rules when storing, using, handling, labeling and disposing of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental standards. Performs clean-up duties, such as cleaning equipment, sweeping, straightening and lining up tools and other property in the assigned area.
