The United States Space Force (USSF) at Kaena Point Space Force Station, Waialua, Hawaii is searching for a Power Plant Operator/ Mechanic for the 21 SOS (WG-5378-10). Description: This position is for a power plant operator/mechanic. The position requires journeyman level experience/competence with installation, operation, inspection, maintenance, and repairs of electrical power production equipment and associated components, electrical distribution equipment at the installation's power plant. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: -- Power generation maintenance: Performing routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on electrical power generation equipment like generators, transformers, and switchgear. -- Electrical distribution systems: Maintaining and troubleshooting electrical distribution systems, including high and low voltage wiring, circuit breakers, and control panels. -- Emergency power systems: Ensuring the functionality of backup power systems and managing their automatic transfer switches. -- Troubleshooting and repair: Diagnosing and fixing electrical faults within power generation and distribution systems using electrical schematics and diagnostic tools. -- System optimization: Analyzing data to optimize power system performance and identify potential issues. -- Project consultation: Advising on new electrical power system installations and upgrades. -- Compliance checks: Ensuring all electrical equipment and installations adhere to safety regulations and Air Force, Space Force, Federal and State and Local standards. KEY SKILLS REQUIRED: -- Strong understanding of electrical theory and principles -- Proficiency in reading electrical blueprints and wiring diagrams -- Experience with electrical testing equipment -- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and repair -- Attention to detail and ability to work independently Ideal Candidate: Ideal candidate will possess (background, education, training, experience of Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC): 3E0X2 Air Force Power Production Specialist (5 or 7 Level). Job advertisement must include the following selective placement factors: 1. Applicant must have experience as a power plant operator / diesel engine mechanic. -- 2. Applicant must have experience working with high voltage (11KVa or higher). -- 3. Applicant must have experience using, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing integrated controls on power generation equipment. Additional requirements: Employee must be able to travel to west end of the island of Oahu, Hawaii daily (no public transportation within 8-mile of the workplace). The position involves shift work/rotating shifts in a 24/7 work schedule. The position also requires the employee to work alone. The employee must be knowledgeable and comfortable working with large diesel generators, high voltage electricity, computer control systems, diesel fuel tanks/transfer system, and other support system, but must also conduct general cleaning and facilities maintenance as needed. Key Skills and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of principles of electricity (AC/DC), solid state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems. 2. Knowledge of the operation of emergency generator power systems. 3. Knowledge of regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation. 4. Skill in reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, and similar guides. 5. Skill in using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical meters to include special tools such as hydraulic knock-out tools, hammers, drills, valve spring compressors, and micrometers. 6. Skill in installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems. 7. Skill in troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators. 8. Ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions, and directives sufficient to provide training to others. Requirements: 1. Must be a U.S. Citizen. 2. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. 3. Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise. 4. May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft in the performance of TDY assignments. 5. May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours and/or shift work may be required which may include overtime and/or irregular hours. 6. PCS / incentive funding is authorized. 7. Position is not eligible for telework or remote work. 8. Position will close in 5 business days or 75 applications (whichever comes first). 9. Work occasionally requires travel away from the normal duty station. 10. The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle up to and including a 2-1/2 ton truck. An appropriate valid driver’s license may be required for the position. 11. Position may require the employee to operate a forklift up to 15,000 pound capacity to move heavy power support equipment. 12. Shift work may be required. 13. The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. 14. Emergency overtime may be required. 15. May be required to train/guide lower-graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees. 16. This is a ‘KEY’ position. Incumbent(s) must be removed from their military recall status if alternatives for filling the position during an emergency are not available.
