Job Overview
Come perform state-of-the-art multidisciplinary work in the application of Advanced AI, Machine learning, and Data science disciplines! This role requires a deep understanding of the latest advancements in AI/ML and the techniques to solve complex problems in weapons research & development (R&D). This position will be filled as a 3-year Flexible Length and Renewable Flexible Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc). Further, this position may be extended or noncompetitively converted to a career appointment. This position is eligible for a Recruitment Bonus that will be paid bi-weekly. This Recruitment Incentive is authorized for a highly qualified candidate with AI skills, education, and experience that can demonstrate advanced competencies and skills in the field of Weapon Cyber AI. This position will serve as the Senior Matter Expert (SME) on Artificial Intelligence for the Weapon Cyber Section and will drive innovation with Assured AI to develop secure, collaborative, smarter weapons and contribute to technological advancements across the Air Force. The duties and responsibilities are to develop secure, collaborative, smarter weapons across AFRL as AI SME they are responsible for training the mid-level engineers on all aspects of AI. This position will require signing a Continuous Service Agreement (CSA). We will be accepting candidates now through 31 March 2025.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Cybersecurity or related technical field; Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance in computer vision, statistics and/or related fields
Hands-On Experience Using Tools Such As: C/C , Python, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, dlib and database languages; Outstanding written and oral presentation skills are required for both internal and sponsor-facing communications

- Performs state-of-the-art multidisciplinary work in the application of advanced AI, machine learning, and data science disciplines to plan, direct, and coordinate complex projects applied to weapons research and development.
- Applies expert knowledge and theories, principles, concepts, and methods in AI/ML and data science, with emphasis on cutting-edge ML approaches such as deep-, reinforcement-, unsupervised-learning etc.
- This role requires a deep understanding of the latest advancements in AI/ML and the ability to apply these techniques to solve complex problems in weapons R&D.
- As a senior technical leader, this role involves leading a team of AI/ML engineers and data scientists, providing a compelling technical vision, and ensuring the team's work is technically sound and aligns with DoD priorities.
- The role requires strong leadership skills, including the ability to inspire a team, manage resources effectively, and communicate weapon data science R&D projects and strategy to senior leaders.
- A critical duty will be training and developing team members in relevant AI/ML skills, tools, and knowledge to create a highly adept cadre of AI/ML researchers.
- Independently defines research objectives in the AI/ML domain and determines how they may be best accomplished, develops and evaluates alternatives, defines the approach, conducts the analyses, and documents findings and products related to AI/ML research and consultation.
- Demonstrates skill in applying innovative multidisciplinary techniques and methods in AI/ML to identify and resolve issues; ensures resolutions are consistent with DoD autonomy guidelines.
- Demonstrates creativity and foresight by identifying and presenting detailed technical reports on new AI/ML concepts and technical directions, and by defining future technology requirements.
- Collaborates and/or directly consults with other DoD labs and organizations, academic, international and industry partners in the field of AI/ML and data science.
- Perform trade-space analysis, and gain scientific knowledge in weapon data science, as demonstrated by at least 10 years of experience in the following technology areas:
- digital engineering, algorithm development, data science, weapon open system architecture, operations research analysis, interface controls, reverse engineering , cyber defense, software enabled services, model based system engineering.
- Contribute to the technical work program of one or more projects and produce quality products focused on successful sponsor outcomes.
- Provide thought leadership and collaborate with academic and industry partners.
- Provide exemplary leadership, caring mentorship and collaborative technical advice to staff.
- Use modern software engineering techniques to develop AI-related software, evaluate AI solutions and compare to sponsor requirements and needs.

Required Qualifications

- Technical or scientific bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited university is mandatory. All transcripts must be provided.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in related fields of study.
- Candidates that possess a current/active U.S. Government clearance are preferred.
- Proven experience with: Statistical Methods, Neural Networks, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Data Science, Privacy, Trust & Safety, Software Engineering or similar.
- Individuals must have one year of specialized experience, which includes mastery of advanced electronics engineering concepts, principles, practices, standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment sufficient to apply experimental theories, principles, and concepts to project execution and advisory services. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
