What are the responsibilities and job description for the Package Testing Lab Technician position at Air Sea Containers?
The Technician is to perform assembly and test sequences on packagings in accordance with specific federal rules and regulations. [The US DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations as they pertain to packaging specification and performance.] This will include gathering and specification of components, selection of proper filling substances, filling and closing the packaging system according to predetermined instructions, performing the required tests, recording the results, and preparing a test report on the results of the test sequence.
The job requires hands-on capability to perform routine maintenance and process improvements for the lab equipment and procedures as training and the job evolves.
During the training, mentoring, and OJT period; the technician will become proficient in understanding the regulations governing the use of the tested packagings to ensure the packaging program remains in conformance with the applicable regulations and support the company sales and customer service efforts.

The Lab Technician will be required to understand a wide variety of tasks in the regulatory program that requires specific personal skills:

· The physical ability to handle filled packages for testing.
· Candidate must be capable of working efficiently independently and as part of a team.
· Interpersonal/customer interaction skills are essential.
Experience:
Experience in the packaging industry or the Hazardous Materials Regulations are very beneficial, but not an absolute requirement. However, OTJ and mentoring are expected aspects of the skills development process for this very specific type of work.
Any prior technical experience/education in the applicable areas should be listed; as well as hands-on experience with equipment/machines, warehouse or manufacturing skills and experience.
Qualifications:
This is an opportunity for both an experienced, trained practitioner and someone who needs OTJ/mentoring. The best qualifications are embodied in a candidate that has a technical/engineering background or interest and is capable of being a self-starting curious learner.
Most types of technical/engineering training or degrees are adaptable to this domain expertise but are not required. Packaging engineering expertise is preferred. However, the ability to read, engage, and understand a dense technical regulation is imperative.
This is a skills-based position and not a credential-based position and an appetite for learning is essential.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
· Run the packaging testing and certification program.
· Maintain proper and complete specifications of the packaging program.
· Write and maintain the required certifications for company certified packagings.
· Perform all required testing on packagings as needed including collection and recordation of packagings and tests.
· Support sales and customer services on questions related to the packaging program.
· Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials, and processes and formulate efficient solutions.
· Interact with suppliers, outside engineering, product management, quality control, operations, and sourcing to assist in the implementation of packaging programs.
· Assist procurement to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.
· Develop and implement applicable test plans to assure regulatory compliance while meeting customer needs.
· Build and maintain packaging expertise across diverse industrial packaging types, materials, processes, equipment, and technology.
· Provide knowledge, experience, and leadership to solve packaging related issues.
· Provide project documentation and communication for all packaging support and project requests.
· Assist with the complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
· Have or acquire an understanding of Quality Assurance principles as they would apply to packaging programs and operations.
