Position Summary:
Airbus U.S. Space and Defense, Inc. is looking for a driven, detail-oriented, and creative Requirements Engineer to assist in defining requirements, design system architectures, and analyze advanced unmanned aircraft systems. Candidates should bring an established engineering background and experience in aerospace programs.
Position Responsibilities:
As an engineer in this uncrewed aircraft system project, you will contribute to international team of Airbus engineers, collaborate with multiple partners, and collaborate in efforts to define system requirements, develop system architectures, and integrate subsystems to ensure seamless functionality. You will work in collaboration with a diverse partnership, participate interface designs, while identifying and addressing risks. Additionally, you will assist in synchronizing project schedules, track budgets, document progress, and contribute to continuous improvement while fostering innovation in UAS technologies and engineering practices.
Requirements Engineering 75%
- Collaborate with DoD representatives, end-users, and cross-functional engineering teams to convert operational needs into technical specifications (Functional Descriptions, Sys/Sub-sys Segment Specification (SSS), Sys/Sub-sys Design Description SSDD)):
- Collect, analyze and refine stakeholder needs and constraints to meet a requirement quality criteria (e.g. SMART).
- Help develop and consolidate an architecture satisfying stakeholder needs and constraints
- Define, analyze, and document system, subsystem, and component-level requirements.
- Ensure that requirements are traceable, testable, and verifiable throughout the system lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain a Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) to monitor compliance with customer and regulatory needs.
- Participate in requirements review boards and resolve requirement changes.
- Work alongside software, hardware, and systems engineers to address requirement conflicts and trade-offs.
- Align with DoD, FAA, and MIL-STD requirements for UAS operations is a plus.
- Validate compliance with cybersecurity (RMF), airworthiness, and interoperability standards.
- Support Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies for digital engineering and requirement validation.
- Define and support test and evaluation (T&E) criteria to ensure requirements are met during prototyping and field testing.
- Develop and present Interface Requirement Specifications (IRS), Interface Control Documents (ICD), Interface Definition Documents (IDD), and other technical artifacts during formal reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR).
Roadmap Development 15%
- Support the development of the Aerial Logistics Connector product roadmap, including design adjustments, schedule, and cost targets aligned with future business captures.
- Assist in defining customer-driven changes to ensure the system performs optimally in highly complex operational environments
Additional Responsibilities 10%
- Engage in all necessary engineering activities to develop, maintain, and evolve Airbus U.S. Space and Defense, Inc.'s uncrewed aircraft products.
- Promote cost savings by leveraging existing Airbus platform designs and manufacturing infrastructures to explore new opportunities in this rapidly growing market.
Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering or a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) with relevant Requirements Engineering work experience
- Preferred: Master's in degree in Systems Engineering or a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) with relevant Engineering work experience
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years with a Bachelor's degree, or 3 years with a Master's degree
- Proven track record of working with aerospace hardware systems, from conceptual designs and trade-offs through detailed design, development, manufacturing, integration, testing, deployment, and operations
Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:
- Experience defining and decomposing uncrewed aircraft systems requirements, along with verifying and validating requirements (e.g., Requirements Verification and Traceability Matrices)
- Familiarity with autonomous systems and mission autonomy architectures, spanning operations from takeoff to enroute decision-making to terminal destination landing, including launch, flight operations, mission CONOPS, and user interfaces
- Experience with MIL-STD-810 and RTCA DO 160 (Environmental Testing), STANAG 4586 (UAS Interoperability), and FAA Part 107 / Part 91 regulations
- Proficiency with configuration and requirements management tools (e.g. SVN, Git, ClearCase) and requirements management platforms (e.g. Cameo, DOORS, RequisitePro)
- Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), including SysML
- Experience with Class II UAS platforms (Medium Altitude Long-Endurance) and autonomy systems at Level 3/4, with the ability to scale towards Level 5 automation is a plus
- Familiarity with Airbus products, especially Helionix, with the ability to ensure maximum reuse and identify necessary modifications for UAS integration is a plus
- Understanding of vertical lift or medium-scale UAS systems and their unique operational challenges, particularly within autonomy and platform development is a plus
- Experience contributing to the analyses in areas such as affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory compliance, certification, product assurance, or other specialty engineering disciplines
- Communicate clearly and concisely across multiple levels
- Team-minded and ready to work in a multi-functional, multi-cultural, fast-paced, and complex technical environment
- Display a flexible attitude with strong initiative
- Demonstrated ability to deliver results
Travel Required:
- Periodic travel (less than 20%) to Airbus U.S. Space and Defense, Inc. facilities or partner companies
- Occasional international travel to collaborate with European Airbus Helicopter counterparts
