POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Machinist will be responsible for overseeing 2nd shift's day-to-day machining operation, including machine setup, quality control, team training, troubleshooting, production planning, and communication with management to achieve production goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to maintaining high quality standards and optimizing shop floor operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Coach, mentor, and guide machinists on proper techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards.
Sets-up and runs multiple production machines. Performs machine operations (including reworking parts), such as cutting, shaping, deburring, forming, drilling, and reaming parts. Performs machine operations where the materials, tooling, and sequence of operations have been pre-planned and established. Makes necessary machine adjustments and reports improper machine functioning or cutting action for correction.
Conducts thorough Inspections of parts to ensure conformance to specifications using measuring and instruments such as gages, calipers, micrometers and comparators. Uses various types of magnification equipment (including a microscope), to detect and avoid damage to surfaces and critical areas. Visually inspects parts for burrs or damaged machined surfaces.
Monitors production schedules, identifies potential bottlenecks, and adjusts workflows to meet deadlines efficiently.
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve machine malfunctions, programming errors, tool wear, and mechanical issues.
Utilizes problem-solving skills to analyze complex problems and implement effective solutions.
Routinely maintains equipment to ensure cleanliness, accuracy, and reliability specific to division requirements.
Accurately and regularly performs Statistical Process Control (SPC) specific to division requirements.
Actively implements lean initiatives by identifying and providing recommendations on areas for improvement. Effectively applies lean concepts and tools in work area.
Observes all company policies and procedures, including safety rules, and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
Maintains manufacturing operations and technical knowledge by attending in-house training or educational workshops and reviewing technical manuals and related publications.
Provides regular updates to management on production progress and recommends operational improvements.
Enforces safety regulations and ensures machinists follow proper safety protocols.
Performs other related responsibilities, as requested.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Trade school course completion, Associate of Arts (AA) degree, or equivalent external training in Manufacturing which has provided both theoretical and practical knowledge in the field.
Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through 5 years of directly related experience; or may have a Bachelor's degree in related technical discipline and no prior directly related experience.
Strong team leadership qualities and the ability to train and motive others.
Supervise and train other machinists, technicians, and operators and coordinate with engineers, managers, and clients on the specifications, deadlines, and quality standards of projects.
Setting up, operating, and adjusting machines such as lathes, mills, drills, saws, grinders and CNC machines.
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, manuals, specifications, and verbal instructions.
Strong knowledge of machine shop mathematics, which may include trigonometry.
Ability to effectively apply lean initiatives.
Demonstrates effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
Interprets reports and uses job specific software applications. Able to use employee self-service systems to access online information and use specialized automated systems.
Effectively demonstrates team member competencies and participates in goal setting, performance feedback and self-development activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of aerospace or similar industry products and manufacturing and assembly operations. Considerable knowledge of manufacturing routings, travelers, blueprints, and/or the overall production process. Ability to effectively apply continuous improvement methods to manufacturing functions (e.g. process mapping, design-to-production automation). Ability to use standard business software applications and/or specialized data analysis or database tools. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form. Ability to adapt procedures, techniques, and/or processes to meet special needs. Ability to work on assignments that are complex where considerable judgement and initiative is required to resolve problems and make recommendations. Ability to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and provide guidance to other non-exempt or hourly personnel. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to respond to inquiries and to effectively communicate and present information. Ability to effectively demonstrate team member competencies and participate in goal-setting, performance feedback, and self-development activities.
TYPICAL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the team member is required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time. The team member is required to demonstrate manual dexterity and use hands to operate machinery. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Also expected of the team member is regular attendance, and the ability to work cooperatively and professionally with others. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
