Position Summary

AirJoule is seeking a Principal Applications Engineer to join the application engineering team, which focuses on optimization of device performance and understanding its performance landscape. AirJoule® technology dehumidifies air with record-breaking energy efficiency, and then converts it into pure water. The role of the Principal Applications Engineer is essential for the success of the technology, because it connects basic R&D to real-world performance.This role will be involved with modeling of AirJoule® systems and subcomponents, with respect to mass balance, process properties, and thermal management. The Principal Applications Engineer is expected to guide experimentation to validate the models and will run in tandem with the product development team in order to optimize AirJoule® technology. This assignment will be located at AirJoule’s headquarters in Newark, DE. The Principal Applications Engineer should be familiar with complex chemical or mechanical systems, process control and automation, and developing software-based models of chemical and mechanical systems.

• Act as a project leader for efforts aimed at development and deployment of AirJouleÒ systems.
• Lead efforts between the Applications Engineering and Product Development teams, aimed at optimization of AirJouleÒ adsorption systems. This will include optimization of geometry, sizing, flowpath, adsorption kinetics as it pertains to AirJouleÒ adsorbent-coated heat exchangers.
• Develop models/simulations for AirJouleÒ systems, interactions with environments, and AirJouleÒ adsorption subcomponents. Software such as ASPEN, Matlab, COMSOL, DWSIM, Solidworks, etc. may be utilized.
• Lead efforts to design and implement supporting infrastructure for AirJouleÒ prototypes, such as power sources, heat exchangers, communications systems, and transportation containers.
• Act as a mentor to junior employees and help provide development opportunities and support.
• Work with the Applications Engineering Team to design testing campaigns with Design-of-Experiment methods, execute them with sufficient experimental rigor, compile and communicate results.
• Document experimental results in the form of PowerPoint presentations, technical report documents, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) entries.
• Train new employees in the responsibilities listed herein and similar work.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree (12 years of experience), or 10 years and a masters degree, or a 6 and a PhD… in chemical engineering or chemistry. Related degrees with significant direct experience in chemical engineering / chemistry will be considered.
• Experience with either sorption, filtration, ion exchange, catalysis (hetereogeneous), or HVAC systems is required.
• Experience acting a project lead with teams of at least 3 people is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Technical leadership, especially with respect to product development or commissioning of large systems
• Ability to work under pressure, especially with respect to deadlines or while participating in field deployments
• Experience with running multicomponent mechanical and/or chemical systems, such as ‘rigs’, reactors, automotives, technical prototypes, etc. including knowledge of safe operating methods.
• Understanding of adsorption processes and mass transport. Fields with similar concepts such as ion exchange, heterogeneous catalysis, etc. are acceptable.
• Basic understanding of mechanical systems, especially heat exchangers, pumps, fans, motors and condensers.
• Passionate about hands-on work while acting as a driver with respect to project execution.
• Ability to work under pressure and flexibility towards pivoting.
• Strong interpersonal skills and desire to work as part of a team.
