TITLE: Reading Specialist, Long-Term Substitute
TYPE OF POSITION: Full-time (1.0). Salary commensurate with experience and education, as set forth in the agreement between the Seekonk School Department and the Seekonk Educators’ Association.
APPROX. DURATION: 04/28/25 until end of the 204-2025 school year

LOCATION: Mildred H. Aitken Elementary School
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Assistant Principal
The Reading Specialist provides learning experiences in literacy, guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, district standards and requirements, and best practices in literacy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed, or eligible for licensure as a Reading Specialist by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
- At least three years’ experience as an elementary classroom teacher preferred, but not required
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults
- Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
- Ability to relate well with students, colleagues, parents, and staff
RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS which include but are not limited to:
- Provides learning experiences in language arts and reading guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements, while creating an environment that is conducive to student learning and involvement. Monitors students’ understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments when appropriate.
- Provides direct instruction to students identified as eligible for reading services in individual, small group, and/or full classroom settings.
- Provides consultant/collaborative services to classroom teachers, model “best” instructional practices, and team teach as appropriate to support individuals or groups of students in learning or transferring effective strategies.
- Implements, evaluates and refines instructional practice.
- Demonstrates appreciation for and sensitivity to, the diversity among individuals and strives to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning.
- Maintains and improves professional competence through attendance at professional development events, and by self-generated activities that meet district expectations and the requirements for re-certification.
- Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of his/her grade/team/department, building and school district, attending all faculty and committee meetings as required, and district-wide committees as needed.
- Other duties, as assigned according to the SEA contract.
