Join a growing team that emphasizes digital-first editing while maintaining The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s standards for print, social media and other platforms. This is a part-time position. The suc-cessful candidate will edit content for our web site, ajc.com, and other platforms, focusing heavily on spelling errors, missing or wrong words, grammatical and punctuation mistakes and factual errors, as well as issues of bias/balance and other concerns that have potential to harm our credibility. You will help pre-sent content in a way that provides users with an engaging experience – all the while ensuring that each piece of content meets the high journalistic standards that readers expect from us.
Edit content for AJC.com and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
- Review copy for accuracy, spelling, grammar, style, clarity, fairness, taste, bias, balance of perspectives and libel. Make corrections and revisions as needed online or in print.
- Edit for clarity, untangling complex sentences and providing a great, engaging reader experience.
- Check facts, prioritizing those that could cause legal trouble or embarrass the institution if wrong.
- Work closely with content creators and line editors to address issues, including fairness, tone, taste and holes in coverage in stories.
- Prioritize for speed, ensuring the most urgent material is edited quickly.
- Spend appropriate time on tasks with minimal supervision.
Write display type for AJC.com and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
- Understand the intended audience and ensure the headline and story top are compelling for that audience.
- Write headlines to convey the most interesting and important aspects of each story.
- Write or rewrite photo captions that provide supplemental information.
- Test A/B headlines when appropriate
Review copy for final publication on AJC.com and in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, paying attention to bias and balance and other mistakes that harm our credibility.
- Review stories when published on AJC.com, ensuring they look correct and will provide users with a great experience
- Proofread finished print pages
- Verify jumps in print and links online
- Verify stories end cleanly
- Verify barcodes, dates, price, etc.
- Verify publication dates for comics, puzzles, etc.
- Output pages and republish stories to digital as needed.
Education, Yrs & Type of Experience
- With a BA/BS, must have 2 years of relevant experience.
- With a Master’s degree have up to 2 years of relevant experience or a minimum of 6 years of total experience in related analytics without a degree.
- Prefer at least 5 years of experience as a copy editor, wire editor, page designer or other type of news content production editor.
Additional Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to handle complicated, legally sensitive content that requires special care and judgment.
