Summary :
Under general supervision, performs a variety of activities associated with booking, release, and detention of prisoners in a detention facility. Detention Officers may be assigned to a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular rotational basis that includes working, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications :
Must possess one of the following : AZ Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA), Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), or Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA / FLETC) certification, plus experience equivalent to one year full-time detention, correctional, or closely related criminal justice work. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (no DUI / DWI convictions within the last 5 years.) Must be able to pass an extensive background check, which includes polygraph test, psychological evaluation, and physical exam.
Examples of Duties :
- Books prisoners into detention center, including photographing / fingerprinting prisoners, searching prisoners, inventorying / storing personal property, filling out required paperwork, and recording the booking process in the appropriate log books and records systems.
- Operates / monitors video surveillance system / equipment.
- Transfers prisoners between cells.
- Escorts prisoners within the facility for meals and other activities.
- Restrains combative, argumentative, and / or suicidal prisoners.
- Determines if prisoners are ill / injured and administers / obtains appropriate medical treatment.
- Determines release criteria for prisoners according to established policies / procedures.
- Coordinates with Court staff when bond is posted.
- Prepares and distributes appropriate paperwork when prisoners are released or transferred.
- Cleans detention facility as needed.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
