What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Officer - non-certified position at Ak-Chin Indian Community?
Under general supervision, performs a variety of activities associated with booking, release, and detention of prisoners in a detention facility. Detention Officers may be assigned to a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular rotational basis that includes working nights, weekends, and holidays.Experience equivalent to one year full time detention, correctional, or closely related criminal justice work. Will be required to attend a AZ Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA) or Basic Corrections Officer Training Program. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements (no DUI/DWI convictions within the last 3 years.) Must be able to pass an extensive background check, which includes polygraph test, psychological evaluation and physical exam.
- Books prisoners into detention center, including photographing/fingerprinting prisoners, searching prisoners, inventorying/storing personal property, filling out required paperwork, and recording the booking process in the appropriate log books and records systems.
- Operates/monitors video surveillance system/equipment.
- Transfers prisoners between cells.
- Escorts prisoners within the facility for meals and other activities.
- Restrains combative, argumentative, and/or suicidal prisoners.
- Determines if prisoners are ill/injured and administers/obtains appropriate medical treatment.
- Determines release criteria for prisoners according to established policies/procedures.
- Coordinates with Court staff when bond is posted.
- Prepares and distributes appropriate paperwork when prisoners are released or transferred.
- Cleans detention facility as needed.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of basic criminal justice/law enforcement principles and practices. Knowledge of Federal and Community laws, codes, and regulations related to prisoner detention. Knowledge of Community Detention Center policies and procedures, including booking/release processes, bond procedures, and established safety and security requirements.
- Knowledge of Court processes relating to prisoners.

- Knowledge of basic recordkeeping and report preparation practices and techniques.
