Job Summary

The Controls Technician – Troubleshooting and Commissioning Specialist is a hands-on role focused on diagnosing, troubleshooting, and commissioning industrial automation systems. This role involves ensuring control systems operate effectively in manufacturing environments, resolving technical issues, and supporting system integration at client sites. The ideal candidate is proficient in PLC systems and has a strong aptitude for diagnosing hardware and software challenges in real-time.

This position bridges the gap between design and operational functionality, requiring excellent technical skills, practical problem-solving abilities, and a proactive approach to client interaction. The role is vital in ensuring seamless deployment and long-term reliability of industrial automation systems, contributing to the company’s reputation for quality and innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth troubleshooting and diagnostics on industrial automation systems, including PLCs, motion control, and vision systems.
  • Commission new control systems at customer sites, ensuring proper installation, configuration, and functionality.
  • Analyze and resolve system issues during testing, startup, and production phases.
  • Provide technical support and training to operators and maintenance personnel on system functionality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, design, and project management, to optimize system performance.
  • Conduct equipment calibrations, system verifications, and functional testing to meet client specifications.
  • Maintain and update technical documentation, including as-built drawings and programming adjustments.
  • Identify opportunities for system improvement and provide feedback for design enhancements.
  • Support the development of maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for deployed systems.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and company protocols during all commissioning activities.

Job Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field. Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required.
  • 5 years of relevant hands-on experience in control systems troubleshooting, commissioning, or field service may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Strong technical expertise in PLC programming (especially Allen Bradley PLCs), motion control, and vision systems
  • Strong knowledge of troubleshooting and maintaining PLC systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Familiarity with motion control, vision systems, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, or Profibus).
  • Practical problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues efficiently.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, electrical meters, and software for commissioning.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for on-site client interactions.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to client sites (75 % travel).

Licenses, Certifications or Special Qualifications

  • Certifications in industrial automation (e.g., Allen-Bradley) are highly desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet site-specific safety requirements (e.g., PPE compliance).
