Job Description Summary
The Sr. Electrical Engineer will join the R&D Instruments & Systems team in Marlborough, MA and will play a critical role in product sustaining and development efforts for Akoya’s PhenoCycler® and PhenoImager® spatial biology platforms. These platforms are complex automated systems that include custom electronics to control liquid handling, opto-mechanical systems, and precision motion.
Core responsibilities of the Sr. Electrical Engineer include analysis, design, development, verification, implementation, and support activities related to instrument electronics, cabling, and firmware. This includes manufacturing support and documentation upkeep, adhering to ISO-13485 practices.
A successful candidate for this position will have strong electronics and firmware design and debugging skills and a demonstrated interest in optimizing designs for performance, reliability, manufacturability, and safety. We are looking for a motivated and curious individual to become the relied-upon electronics expert within a cross-functional product development team.
This is a hybrid role with flexible in-person days. Some project phases may require more days in person than others.
Duties and Responsibilities
Subject matter expertise:
- Develop deep expertise in electronics and firmware used in Akoya instruments, including how these relate to system-level performance.
- Provide technical guidance on electronics and firmware aspects of Akoya instruments to the broader R&D team and other functional groups such as Quality, Support, and Manufacturing.
- Provide expert feedback in design and architecture reviews for software and hardware integrated with instrument electronics.
Design and development throughout the product life cycle:
- Modify existing control electronics and firmware to support product improvements.
- Design new control electronics, firmware, cabling, and interconnect boards.
- Coordinate with vendors for electronic components and compliance testing.
- Plan and execute verification activities during product development and sustaining phases.
- Design and improve fixtures and procedures for testing electronics and firmware.
- Transfer PCB test fixtures to manufacturing and train operators.
- Contribute to project documentation (requirements, verification reports, FMEA) and change order routing in an ISO-13485-compliant environment.
- Plan and execute system-level and PCB-level root cause investigations for electronics and firmware failure modes and recommend remedies.
- Review requests for design changes and part substitutions; make recommendations as required.
General
- Maintain development and test equipment according to Akoya’s quality processes.
- Collaborate with immediate team members and cross functional groups to accomplish specific tasks and team objectives within project timelines.

Qualifications/Skills (Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, etc)
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- 5 years experience in an R&D and/or Manufacturing operations environment
- 2 years in commercial product development role in ISO-9001 or ISO-13485 environment preferred.
- Experience developing and integrating control electronics for complex mechanical systems that include precision motion and imaging sensors.
- Experience with circuit design and theory of operation.
- Experience with schematic capture, layout (PADS preferred), and PCB functional testing.
- Experience troubleshooting nonfunctional PCBs using root cause analysis methods.
- Experience debugging with oscilloscopes, DVMs, and signal analyzers.
- Experience designing, verifying, and transferring custom electronics test fixtures.
- Experience writing/debugging firmware in C (required), with experience in application-level debugging in C# (desirable).
- Experience drafting documentation for verification, FMEA, and design transfer.
- Familiarity with IEC 61010 (electrical safety), IEC 61326 (electromagnetic compatibility), and IEC 60601 (medical electrical equipment) standards.
- Methodical troubleshooting skills with a curiosity-driven approach to problem solving.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with a cross-functional team.
- Ability to work on multiple projects with evolving priorities and deadlines.
- Experience working with BoM’s and routings in a QMS preferred
The hiring range for this position is $105,000 - $138,000 per year, which may factor in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. Our full-time regular positions also include an annual performance-based bonus (or a sales incentive plan) and long-term incentive units (equity) provided as part of our compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
