What are the responsibilities and job description for the Housing Policy Specialist position at AKPIRG?
Organization Description: The Alaska Public Interest Research Groups work is to advocate, educate, and research to support Alaskan communities. AKPIRG works across five specializations: energy affordability, broadband access, economic justice, good government, and language access. AKPIRG is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization first incorporated in 1974.
AKPIRG is seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated individual to join AKPIRGs Economic Justice Team. AKPIRGs Housing Policy Specialist will work with the Economic Justice Lead to support abundant housing policies with research and coalition-building.
Core Responsibilities:
- Research residential zoning and building codes across Alaska and in comparable states
- Contribute to the framework for responsive building code development project, hosted by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation
- Provide technical assistance to abundant housing advocates in Anchorage, Juneau, and other Alaskan communities as need emerges
- Build and maintain relationships with housing organizations across Alaska
- Foster abundant housing collaboratives and initiatives with community members across Alaska
Qualifications:
A strong applicant will have demonstrable experience working with residential zoning and building codes and conducting policy research and analysis. The ideal candidate will excel at synthesizing highly technical information through a public interest lens and building trusted relationships with community partners. The selected candidate must have values aligned with AKPIRGs commitment to decolonization, justice, and accountability. They must also be able to work within dynamic teams, manage several projects at once, and be highly organized. Experience or education in urban planning and/or community development are a plus.
Location/travel:
Applicants based in Anchorage should anticipate working in-person some of the week in AKPIRG's office, with flexibility. Applicants based outside of Anchorage should anticipate occasional travel to Anchorage, typically a few times per year, to attend staff retreats, events, and other organizational activities.
