Summary
The Child Life Specialist are responsible for maximizing the physical and emotional health as well as the social, cognitive and developmental abilities of children, and minimizing the potential stress and trauma that children and their families may experience.
Responsibilities
- Plans and implements comprehensive Child Life services.
- Provides preparation and facilitates adaptive coping strategies for patients and families for medical procedures and other health care experiences.
- Provides education and emotional support to patients and families; advocate and communicate patients’/families’ needs to multi-disciplinary staff.
- Provides education related to child development and impact of hospitalization.
- Supervises and trains students and volunteers.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psych/social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.
- Perform other related miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Technical Expertise
- Experience in a clinical setting as a Child Life Specialist is preferred.
- Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.
- Experience in healthcare is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required. Experience with Epic software or similar EMR software is preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Child Life specialization, or related field is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
- Certification: Certified Child Life Specialist within one year of employment is required. Current Health Care Provider BLS training is required.
- Eligible candidates are required to have completed a 600-hour clinical Child Life internship under the supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist.
- Years of relevant experience: 0 to 2 years is preferred.
