School Resource Officer (SRO)
Location: Al Salam Day School, Ballwin, MO
Reports To: School Principal, Head of Schools in collaboration with IFGSTL Security Team
Position Type: Full-Time
Position Summary:
The School Resource Officer (SRO) plays a key role in promoting a safe, secure, and respectful school environment for all students, staff, and families. This individual will manage building access, respond to student behavior concerns, support daily school operations such as arrival and dismissal, and build positive relationships with the school community. The SRO serves exclusively in support of school operations and does not provide security for the house of worship affiliated with the campus.
Primary Responsibilities:
Campus Security & Supervision
- Aid in monitoring and securing all school entrances and exits throughout the day.
- Greet, sign in, and sign out all visitors; ensure proper identification and authorization.
- Enforce school access protocols and ensure unauthorized individuals are not permitted entry.
- Conduct regular safety checks around the campus and report any concerns to administration.
- Respond calmly and professionally to behavioral incidents, de-escalating situations when necessary and documenting events as required.
Daily Operations Support
- Assist with student arrival and dismissal to ensure a safe and orderly process.
- Help supervise transitions during high-traffic times such as lunch, recess, or school-wide events.
- Coordinate with school leadership regarding any student, staff, or facility safety needs.
Collaboration & Communication
- Maintain open communication with the larger security team and school leadership regarding safety practices and concerns.
- Attend school meetings and safety training as needed to stay aligned with school procedures and expectations.
Community Relationship Building
- Serve as a trusted, visible presence on campus who students, staff, and families feel comfortable approaching.
- Promote a culture of mutual respect, kindness, and cooperation in alignment with the school’s Islamic values.
- Support school events, open houses, or parent engagement activities as needed to maintain strong family-school partnerships.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in school safety and security preferred.
- Familiarity with working in a school setting, especially within a culturally and religiously respectful environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including calm conflict resolution and respectful communication.
- High school diploma or GED required; additional training in crisis response, de-escalation, or child development is a plus.
- Must successfully pass a background check and meet state/local requirements for school safety personnel.
- Cultural sensitivity and understanding of Islamic values and practices strongly preferred.
Work Conditions:
- Primarily on-site at the school campus during school hours.
- Requires walking, standing, and outdoor supervision in varied weather conditions.
- Occasional flexibility may be required for school events or special safety needs.
