JOB TITLE : English as a Second Language (ESL) Specialist
REPORTS TO : Director of Federal Programs

JOB SUMMARY
To provide instruction and supervision of the English as a Second Language Program for the school system.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This supervisory position includes, but is not limited to Tutors, Translators and other ESL Personnel and activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assesses English language proficiency, academic progress, and social development of English Learners to determine appropriate services.
- Creates Individualized English Language Plans (I-ELP) for English Learners.
- Interviews, trains, and coordinates ESL tutors.
- Arranges tutoring services for English Learners as needed.
- Administers state approved screener to determine initial English language proficiency of English Learners.
- Assists schools in administering state approved English language proficiency exams.
- Monitors progress reports and report cards of English Learners.
- Assists teachers in securing a wide range of teaching materials and resources, including multi-level reading materials, instructional games, resource materials, etc.
- Counsels students in identifying and addressing their academic and social barriers.
- Assists schools in communicating and maintaining standards of individual student behavior.
- Collaborates with teachers to ensure student success with classwork and homework.
- Communicates pertinent information to parents, such as the goals of the ESL Program and the challenges English Learners may face.
- Informs parents of their child's academic and linguistic progress.
- Participates in meetings related to the educational needs of English Learners, including English Learner Team, Problem Solving Team, Individualized Education Plan Team, Section 504 Team, and parent conferences as required by federal law and requested by the local school.
- Keeps and maintains records pertinent to the ESL Program.
- Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
- Collaborates with schools to provide ESL related professional development upon request.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the field by reading journals and publications, attending professional society meetings, seminars, etc. and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
- Regular and punctual attendance required; full compliance with TCSS leave policies
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Alabama certification with appropriate endorsement. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents and the general public
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Ability to hear. Ability to stand up to one hour at a time. Must have manual dexterity or fine motor skills and have the ability to reach and grasp objects. Must be able to communicate orally. Must be able to stoop and bend. Must be able to lift objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds and carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Must be able to proofread and check documents for accuracy. Must be able to work in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation, or other conditions. May occasionally need to restrain out of control children if necessary, and any other physical, mental or visual ability required by the job.
