You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB and ASD. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity. You will bring a level of expertise to the accreditation and continuous improvement process including, but not limited to, Cognia and CEASD accreditations, The Assistant Principal will provide the majority of support in ensuring ASD’s curriculum and instruction is of high quality. In addition, the Assistant Principal will provide guidance and direction with regard to best-practices instruction and verify this happens in our classrooms and in our residential environments every day. The Assistant Principal will support ASD by enforcing ASD’s code of conduct fairly and impartially, but in a way that allows the school structure to flourish.
- Must possess a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate or certification in another state with ability to obtain reciprocity within 6 months of hire.
- Masters degree(s) in Education Administration, Special Education, Collaborative Special Education or Deaf Education from an accredited university.
- Must hold or be able to obtain Education Administration certification within the first thirty-six (36) of employment from an accredited university.
- Must obtain Deaf Education certification within thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Three years of teaching experience.
- Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) level of INTERMEDIATE according to the
- Educational Specialist in Education Administration, Special Education, Collaborative Special Education or Deaf Education from an accredited university.
- Three years of work experience in educational administration.
- Five years of work experience in the field of deaf education
- Provide leadership based on best practices in the following areas for all assigned staff:
- Curricular improvements
- IEP development, implementation, and accountability
- Staff training and development
- Department goal-setting and implementation
- Instructional accountability
- Provide leadership in obtaining exemplary status in areas related to accreditation
- Provide support to the Guidance Counselor for state assessments in coordination with the Testing Coordinator.
- Provide leadership in coordination with ASD Management Team to maintain a plan for continuous improvement as part of the AIDB Strategic Plan, Accreditation (COGNIA and CEASD), etc.
- Supervise the maintenance of appropriate student records, supervise and review the preparation of student reports, evaluations, report cards, incident reports, etc.
- Assist the Principal and other Director with completing performance evaluations on all staff.
- Document and provide guidance to high school staff members related to any employment requirements/agreements made when hired (CDL/Bus Driver License, Specific Certification, Sign Language Proficiency, etc.)
- Provide administrative leadership to the faculty and staff assigned to the program unit, which includes teachers, teacher aides, and volunteers,
- Actively involve parents in the learning process for their child.
- Monitor instruction daily and provide support.
- Along with the principal, provide guidance in administering discipline according to AIDB Policy.
- Must work closely with the guidance counselor in performing transcript audits for all students at ASD.
- Assist with providing mentoring for current and onboarding academic staff members
- Assist with reassigning staff to ensure safety of students.
- Must be knowledgeable of IDEA requirements and implementation procedures.
- Must work closely with the transition teacher in providing opportunities for ASD students.
- Must effectively communicate with all departments within AIDB and ASD.
- Must monitor and enforce attendance policy.
- Provide guidance to instructional staff regarding progress monitoring and teacher training.
- Collaborate with the other ASD Directors regarding student needs and staff improvement in the residential setting.
- Coordinate and assist with supervision with staff involvement in extracurricular activities as related to High School including, but not limited to, clubs, classes, organizations, parties.
- Must work collaboratively with the Principal and others in creating and implementing various school schedules.
- Must enter all mandatory drills into the nSide platform.
- Must work closely with the Principal and Safety and Security in scheduling and executing all mandatory safety drills.
- Must be able to develop and maintain rapport with staff members, students, parents, alumni, public school personnel, and other professionals and paraprofessionals within the school, AIDB, employers, and others external to AIDB.
- Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) level of ADVANCED is required within thirty-six (36) months.
- Stay abreast of state and federal laws/guidelines that impact special education, and AIDB policies and procedures.
- Supervise and objectively evaluate performance of assigned staff, develop and monitor improvement plans, and coach for improved performance.
- Interpret the academic program to visitors.
- Monitor assigned facilities for safety and cleanliness.
- Act as supervisor of all student records. Maintain an accurate and up-to-date records system, ensuring confidentiality of information.
- Ability to navigate and enter information into PowerSchool SIS aligned with all appropriate guidelines.
- Support all ASD programs.
- Manage departmental budget within budgetary allocations as per policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal of the Alabama School for the Deaf
