As the Director of Elementary Education for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) you will be responsible for working in partnership with other departments at ASD, AIDB units, Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), etc. ASD is committed to meet our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive a world class education.

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB and ASD. This will be accomplished by overseeing transition services as well as demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess an Alabama Teaching Certificate or be able to obtain reciprocity with the State of Alabama within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must possess a Master’s Degree in Special Education, Deaf Education, or Educational Administration or Instructional Leadership from an accredited college/university.
  • At least five successful years of teaching experience.
  • Must possess HI Certification or be willing to gain HI Certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment. .
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possess an Alabama Teaching certificate or be able to obtain reciprocity with the State of Alabama within six (6) months of employment with endorsements in Educational Administration and Deaf Education.
  • Possess a sign language proficiency of ADVANCED upon employment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning educational administration and programming, particularly as they relate to disabled individuals.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in education.
  • Must have or obtain Educational Administration and obtain an endorsement in Deaf Education and/or Special Education within thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Obtain a sign language proficiency of Survival within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • Obtain a sign language proficiency of Intermediate Plus within the first 24 months of employment.
  • Obtain a sign language proficiency of ADVANCED within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Must complete and maintain behavior management training within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Assists the principal with the general administration, supervision, and management of the program unit including personnel, students (grades Pre-K -6), facilities, equipment, and fiscal responsibilities assigned.
  • Provides administrative leadership to the faculty and staff assigned to the program unit which includes teachers, teacher aides, and volunteers.
  • Supervises the maintenance of appropriate student records, supervises and reviews the preparation of student reports, evaluations, report cards, incident reports, student information system and etc.
  • Manages state assessments in coordination with the Testing Coordinator.
  • Provides leadership in the development and implementation of curriculum improvement within the program unit in coordination with other departments.
  • Provides leadership in coordination with ASD Management Team to maintain a plan for continuous improvement as part of the AIDB Strategic Plan, Accreditation (COGNIA and CEASD), etc.
  • Constantly reviews and the effectiveness and performance of each member of his/her staff. Assists and directs staff members in professional and personal development and improvement where needed. Complete performance evaluations on all staff.
  • Documents and provides guidance to elementary school staff members related to any employment requirements/agreements made when hired (CDL/Bus Driver License, Specific Certification, Sign Language Proficiency, etc.)
  • Determines prioritized departmental needs related to equipment, supplies, materials, etc.
  • Manages departmental budget within budgetary allocations as per policies and procedures.
  • Cooperate and communicate effectively and professionally all matters regarding the student, the department, the school, and AIDB, to parents, other teachers, administrators, support personnel and related school staff and the general public.
  • Maintains the discipline and morale of students by carrying out the provisions of the ASD Student Handbook in a consistent and fair manner
  • Serve as instructional leader in the development and improvement of instructional programs in Elementary Education at ASD including conducting observations and evaluations of staff in the department.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal.

SALARY: $75,000– $100,000 Scale A1 Rank 04
(260 Days)

This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
