As an Interpreter for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD), you will be responsible for working in a partnership with other departments at ASD, AIDB units, etc. ASD is committed to meeting our students where they are. You will play a vital role in the lives of our staff, students and community. You will display a positive, approachable, and professional demeanor and will serve in the day-to-day communication with our students, staff, parents and community... You will be able to work independently, as well as with a team. The right candidate for this position will have a passion for working with students, staff, and colleagues to ensure communication is seamless.
Basic Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required
- Possess Alabama Interpreter License upon employment.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years successful work experience in interpreting for Deaf and Deaf/Blind.
- Must possess a minimum entry sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED according to AIDB evaluation system (SLPI/SCPI); and ADVANCED PLUS must be obtained within the first 36 months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- RID recognized certification
- Two years of experience planning and coordinating interpreting services.
Position Requirements:
- Must collaborate with other interpreter coordinators and contract interpreters.
- Work a flexible schedule as needed including nights and weekends.
- Must possess a working knowledge of federal and state laws related to interpreting.
- Provide interpreting services and coordinate interpreter services for ASD staff, students, families, AIDB personnel, and the community.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor interpreting services database.
- Maintain Certification(s) and Alabama Interpreter License.
- Mentor Student Interpreter Interns seeking to become professional certified interpreters.
- Participate in or schedule interpreters for educational meetings (i.e. IEP meetings, Behavior
Intervention meetings, parent/student discipline meetings, staff meetings, etc.) as assigned.
- Possess basic computer knowledge and skills regarding computers/equipment (including remote interpreting).
- Must have fluency in spoken and written English
- Must have knowledge of and be sensitive to Deaf Culture
- Must know and adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Alabama
- Department of Public Safety.
- Possess good interpersonal skills and work cooperatively with AIDB staff, students, and
- the community
- Manage Contract Interpreter Budget for ASD.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

SALARY: $47,948 - $74,468 Scale PI Rank PI Renewable Permit
$53,040 - $84,864 Scale PI Rank L1 Licensed Alabama Interpreter
$63,648 - $95,472 Scale PI Rank M1 Master’s in Interpreting
This position is eligible for the following annual incentives.
Specialization Incentive Pay

Legal (SC: L), other $2,500
Direct deposit required.
This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
