The Assistive Technology Specialist conducts skills assessments, provides equipment recommendations, and delivers technical support, including virtual machine implementation and network management. This position serves individuals and groups throughout Alabama, both on our campuses and at our ten regional centers. The ideal candidate possesses a genuine passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. The Specialist will be involved in the complete service cycle from initial assessment through goal achievement while maintaining timely and accurate documentation of all direct services.
This role requires regular travel across Alabama with opportunities to work in diverse settings, including school systems, businesses, and individual homes. Effective communication with students, staff, and partner organizations is essential to this position, necessitating strong writing, speaking, and public relations skills.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must demonstrate expertise in assembling computers, installing and configuring Windows operating systems, diagnosing and repairing system issues, and maintaining Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
- Must demonstrate expertise in diagnosing and repairing Windows computer systems.
- Must demonstrate willingness to learn and understand methodologies used to educate individuals with visual impairments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years of professional experience in technology, including direct service, computer maintenance or repair, and hardware/software installation and configuration, or equivalent coursework or certification in computer technology.
- Post-secondary education in fields such as Assistive Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics, Technology Training, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of Assistive Technology, including experience with screen readers, screen magnifiers, CCTVs, and Braille devices.
- Experience supporting individuals who are Blind or DeafBlind through the use of assistive technology.
- Experience with networking and systems administration using platforms like Ubiquiti (UniFi) and OPNsense.
- Familiarity with server management, virtualization, and containerization technologies such as Docker, Proxmox, and related hypervisors (e.g., KVM, VirtualBox).
- Competence in configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting systems across multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, and Chrome OS.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in dynamic, diverse computing environments, demonstrating adaptability, initiative, and strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to accessibility and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must achieve a score of 80% or higher on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within twenty-four (24) months of employment, demonstrating competency in reading and writing Braille.
- Must complete AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, Deaf-Blindness, and Multiple Disabilities within twelve (12) months of employment.
- Must be proficient in the use and support of large print Assistive Technology software and devices.
- Must demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot software and hardware issues related to computers, printers, scanners, magnifiers, and Braille devices.
- Must be able to undertake extensive travel, including periodic overnight stays.
- Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must successfully complete a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
