As a High School Teacher for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) you will be responsible for working in a specialized classroom with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, and multi disabled. ASD is committed to meet our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive a world class education.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (HI Certification), Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education OR in Science from an accredited college/university.
- Must hold a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate or valid certification in another state with ability to obtain reciprocity within six (6) months of hire date.
- Must possess a sign language proficiency evaluation of INTERMEDIATE upon employment.
- Possess skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree in Special Education and/or Deaf Education or Science from an accredited college/university.
- One (1) year or more of classroom experience.
- A sign language proficiency evaluation of ADVANCED upon employment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must have or obtain a HI Certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Must have or Biology (6-12), Chemistry (6-12), or General Science (6-12) certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Must possess a sign language proficiency of ADVANCED within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Must complete and maintain Behavior Management training within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid training within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- Must possess excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate using ASL effectively for student instruction.
- A willingness to teach other subject areas as needed and depending on the schedule of our students.
- Provide comprehensive instruction to students at ASD that includes developing and implementing lesson plans, maintaining documentation of student progress in subject matter, use of differentiated instruction that is based on individual student needs.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each assigned student in the ASD program based on school curriculum and state standards. Must be able to conduct IEP meetings with parents and colleagues.
- Develop, submit, and implement course overviews, lesson plans, substitute teacher plans, etc.
- Develop and maintain a classroom learning environment conducive to individual student achievement.
- Determine student programmatic needs relative to materials and supplies, submit requests/recommendations as deemed appropriate.
- Develop a thorough knowledge of the school’s Communication and Language Policies and Procedures and adhere to these at all times.
- Evaluate and report as deemed appropriate, student’s progress and modify student instruction accordingly.
- Determine standards for classroom behavior and provide discipline measures for students according to the standards set by ASD Student Handbook.
- Maintain such records and reports as deemed appropriate (grades, attendance, IEPs, testing, and etc.) and assist in explaining to parents.
- Develop and maintain a positive learning atmosphere and environment.
- Cooperate and communicate effectively and professionally all matters regarding the student, the department, the school, and AIDB, to parents, other teachers, administrators, support personnel and related school staff and the general public.
- Punctual and regular in attending classes, meetings, conferences and other school related duties.
- Participate in workshops and staff in-service programs as scheduled.
- Assist with in-service training for personnel within the school, state, or region.
- Exhibit appropriate grooming and dress which serves as an acceptable role model for students.
- Maintain working knowledge of AIDB Policies and Procedures, ASD Staff Manual, and ASD Student Handbook.
- Attend and/or assist in various extracurricular activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB
Direct deposit required. Annual salary based on hours scheduled to work each academic school year (187 days)
This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
